I have recently been puting more thought into how I vote to firstly ensure I don't let what is happing to my own entry dictate my scoring pattern (as much as possible) and secondly to try and score for both technicals and how the photo affects me. I know this is not new (and there's every chance my method is exactly the same as someone else's that I happened to see some time ago). The way I score an entry is this:
Meets the challenge: 0-2
Lighting/Composition: 0-3
Post Processing: 0-2
Overall Impression: 0-3
What I also find is that by looking at each element results in a longer view and better appreciation of the photo. I don't know if this will help you but it works for me. |
I start at a baseline of 5. If it meets the criteria, and is a decent picture, it will usually get a 5. Better pictures or ones that really move me score higher. 6 is slightly better than average, 7 is better than six, etc. 9 and 10 have to really blow me away. Lower than five is for low quality shots and shots that DNMC.
It's all flexible though, and I don't grade on a curve or consider my own submission (when I have submitted something).

everyone wants an high score, everyone think that their photographs are the best, i know that is not always so, is a game and i like to play but...
my photograph is really a good one (many people has told me this), for the subjects, for the composition, for the background... here people has asked me to print this photograph for for an exhibition, one has asked me to sell it to him and here? in DPC? my scores is sagging visibly...
yes, i'm sorry for this and i think that there is someone who make this for the sake of it...
i will continue to partecipate to the DPC life, challenges included, and this only for my whim, but i'm not so happy...

Because I was so pleased with this entry (Ah, such hubris!) I broke my usual

I dropped .3 overnight, from 6.7 to 6.4
It's painful, but it happens. I take comfort in the fact that it's happening to almost everyone, so I'm hoping it really doesn't affect the outcome that much -- only my psyche.
For those of us who are hating the extremely low scoring of others, the best thing to do is to get out and vote. Vote the way that you would like others to vote. Be open minded, search for what the photographer is trying to do, don't assume you know everything and vote something extremely low -- look deeply, do your research, think. You won't change the way others vote -- too many people have tried. All you can do it set an example.

Mine has been dropping too. Not so bad as Girgio's fortunately.
I did get an oxymoronic comment though... and I don't think it was meant to be.
Least I thought it was oxymoronic anyhow.
