Sooo... I had this crazy idea of doing a photo merge for the architecture competition. San Diego is not know for it's architecture, the options are limited to stucco, stucco, and some stucco... We do have some really cool shaped stucco which I figured I could accentuate by stuffing more into a picture than one exposute alone can possible do.
I just saw the basic editing clause for the architecture challenge.... UGH!!!!!
This is the picture that would have been my submission
On a constructive note. If you look at the sky in this pic (I hope you have enough resolution to see this) you will notice lines as the blue fades from light to dark. How do I avoid these? What is the best way to edit them out of my pictures?
Thanks! |

That's posterization. If you look at your histogram, you'll see the "comb" effect. The gradient is not smooth. To gain smoother gradients, you'll need to work with lossless formats on the highest resolution image you have available. Also, the dynamic range of the scene cannot be so extreme as to require an HDR effort to transition too many tonal ranges in a short distance. Recommend you work with 16-bit images, at least. Also helps to apply adjustments in wide gamut color spaces.

Not that you can photo-merge, or use any sort of panorama stitch in advanced, either...

Some sort of noise-reduction routine, perhaps? Here's a link from a quick googling of the topic. |

I guess the only editing that would allow that would be expert editing. That sucks. The main reason why I enjoy this site is that it causes me to try new things. Photomerge is pushing the limits, but is such a useful tool that allows one to step out of the scenic limitations imposed by a camera. The only way to capture that pic in one exposure would be with a fisheye. The stairs going up are almost opposite each other. A fisheye would have distorted the vertical lines in the building. |

While San Diego may not be "known" for its architecture, you do have a lot of interesting structures to photograph there. I was a professional architectural photographer in SD from the early 70's through the 90's, and I know :-)
Some of the more obvious examples would be the Salk Institute by Louis Kahn, the Geisel Library at UCSD by Wm. Pereira Assoc., the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island, and Petco Park downtown, where the Padres play.
A twilight shot of the ballpark on a night they are playing could be golden... Kahn's Salk Institute is considered to be a masterpiece of modern architecture, and some beautiful images can be had using the central plaza and how it opens to the Pacific horizon.

The Padres are in San Francisco this weekend ... there may be a preseason football game though. |

Salk Institute has a ton of interesting vistas. Especially the "stream" running to the ocean. |

Salk and The Geisel Library just don't interest me that much. The shapes and minimalism are interesting, but I just have never found bare cement that attractive.
Petco Park is a great idea, too bad they are not in town.
Another idea that I had was the Mormon Temple. It's hard to get an interesting shot of it though. There just isn't much contrast in the white. |

Not in Petco, it's baseball-only. Chargers play in Mission Valley in what used to be Jack Murphy Stadium, lawd knows what they call it now...

On the banding issue, as previously mentioned, it is due to limited bit depth that cannot reproduce such a fine gradient. Most of my efforts at getting rid of it with noise reduction or gaussian blur have only made it more pronounced. However, I've recently had some success at minimizing the banding using Topaz Deniose. It does not eliminate it completely, but it does seem to make enough change that it is not evident at an 800 pixel challenge size.

I photographed that for the builders. Raking light, B/W, luminous processing was the answer. Some fascinating surface detail there.

Drive up to Oceanside and photograph the Chart House cantilevered over the harbor :-)
