He says it was about $10 in parts, but a lot of work involved, and for $25 it would be a better deal to buy this one. Anyone have experience with this sort of device? |
It's basically the exact same idea as the Rayflash only made with presumably cheaper materials. The cheaper materials, I imagine, will lead to more light lost and a lower amount transmitted, and possibly uneven lighting. The idea itself though, is super useful, and for that price... It looks wider than the Rayflash/Orbis, and the coupling between flash and adapter looks like it'll let some light through, so I'd cover it up with some reflective metal tape to channel the light back in.
ETA: Having it on the flash in general like that is super nice. I'd say that a large amount of the time I use my Orbis I have it to the side or elevated, and not necessarily shooting through it. Very versatile approach.

Thanks. Sounds like the worst I can do is to lose $25. I just bought some Kenko extension tubes, so this may work well with them. I'll probably order one and I'll report back how well it works. |

Yes, they will compliment each other very well. Extension tubes are nice, and very cool, but you'll quickly see that you'll either need to always use a tripod or you'll have to get nice even lighting up close somehow to shoot handheld and still get a decent DoF. This type of equipment is AWESOME for such an application. |

Difference between ringlight and ringflash.
My cat's eye was adjusting to the light with ringlight, however, the eye can't find time to adjust from darkness to bright flash with ringflash so the pupil is larger.
I like both lights, each have its own use. |
