And I have this deathly ill fear of asking people if I can photograph them. It will be kind of hard to do a photo essay about "Life in Pennsylvania" when I cant ask people to be photographed! What tricks do you all have when approaching others? Any help would be great!

I got the same fear. Having a purpose would make it easier.
Take some pictures of people you are comfortable asking for their picture. Print em up in draft or what ever, put em in a portfolio that you can carry around with you. Then show the strangers what you have so far and ask if they would be willing help you in your endevour. Let em know that they can see (at least) their photo or show em in the LCD, maybe offer to email them a copy. People are more receptive to this than we think.
Just some thoughts.

Because you are photographing them, they become part of the project. Talk to them and make them feel like they are working with you on this. Tell them the details and carry your notes and stuff. |
