Which day/days were you there?

Firstly, Jon it is good to see you around again, welcome back!
Secondly, that is the most stunning design for a monument that I have ever seen, just amazing to me.
I cant think of anything I would change, it is that good.

Best of luck Jon and when it is ready to be unvieled I will be down there to see it!

Mike

I apologize for being a nitpicker, but that's actually a Hawker Sea Fury.

Right :-(

Hawker Sea Fury

Spitfire

Note the asymmetrical nose, the faired cockpit, and the landing gear retracting outwards, not inwards.

Make sure you have a lightning-rod at the front, you don't want to burn the propeller :)

Thank you once more for some thoughtful, funny and fantastically uplifting comments. It's been a tough year (or two in fact) and this is something of a pleasant relief - regardless of the competition outcome.

I hope to spend a bit more time challenging in the near future - it's good therapy at times, although I can tell that some of those familiar DPC 'moan' threads are still around!

Cheers

Hello all - it's been a while!

Just thought I'd draw some gratuitous attention to a recent project I undertook – to design a £2m statue for the Supermarine Spitfire to be built at Southampton where it was designed and built. It was an open competition and I've sent my entry off now (closing date Monday). It was designed in my head and built in Lightwave 3D. Any comments, positive or otherwise welcome – and if there are any sculptors, architects out there who have words of wisdom then that would be good too.

(warning: large images)

Cheers
Jon

Graceful, elegant. Lovely presentation.
I hope you win.

And, oh yes, for heaven's sake, welcome back.

Thanks for the feedback one and all on this.

I've not been in touch due to the fact that my Dad has sadly been diagnosed with leukaemia (AML) - a really difficult few weeks. What time he has we'll make the most of.

To cheer him up a bit, I've been able to tell him that I've been shortlisted for this competition, from 300+ entries to one of six. I now have to wait somewhat anxiously until 21st September when they have a meeting about feasibility and other issues after which they select just two. If it gets that far, then it will drill down further into practicality and cost.

Phew! I'll keep you posted...

I missed this when first posted. BLOWN AWAY by the design. I can't add much other than to throw in with all the positive comments and hopes that this gets built. It would be on the top of my list of reasons to visit the UK again.

Very sorry to hear about your dad, Jon. Glad to see you pop back in to DPC again though.

Sorry about the bad news but let me say that my dad was diagnosed with Leukemia and he died 20 years later of old age, seriously. It's not a death sentence as it used to be. One of my friends from work was diagnosed with it too 7 years ago and it hasn't slowed him down one bit. I don't know what variant your dad has though.

300 down to 6, wow, you must be excited. :)

Good luck although it isn't luck that brought you to this point. :D

Wow, that's not good. I'm really sorry. Wishing him strength through the next period of his life.

Congrats on your success. It's well deserved. I hope you win!

Wow... Agree this is a brilliant design! I hope you win but either way it's one of the best statue designs I have seen. I also agree on the paper-weight... I bet it would sell but the full size would be amazing.

Wow that's awesome! Can't wait to see it come to life!

In Windsor, Ontario, there's a spitfire memorial and the OHL team the Spitfires, consider pitching it to the city ;)

Like others have said, that is one of the most impressive monuments that I have ever seen! I can't imagine another design beating this. Good luck.

On aesthetic grounds, that's certainly true. There may, however, be structural issues, cost issues, that dictate a different winner. However it shakes out, hell of a design!

Sorry to hear about your dad.

Good luck with the next stage of the comp. I grew up in Southampton & think this would be so amazing there. I used to go and look at the little stone plaque they have over near Western (I think it was) that has a small spitfire outline on. Loved that & this, if made, would be so much more powerful.

Anyway good luck with everything in life :)

Thanks again for the thoughts and comments - haven't time to mention all but I've read 'em - believe me!

There will be a feature in the Sunday Telegraph this weekend which may feature mine and the other entries. Can't wait to see those – and I'll try to get hold of images of them to see what you all think of the opposition.
: )

Art Roflmao > thanks! Praise indeed.

Jac > I'd like to go with the way you're thinking despite what I've been told! He's giving it his best shot anyway.

Simms > I hope you're psychic!

LVicari > will do!

Bear_Music > You're quite right - and thank you!

Starbanana > Interesting that you're from there. I hope it would be well received by most residents.

Don't normally make a habit of buying the Telegraph, but will make an exception this Sunday - fingers crossed your design is featured!
