So, in my recent entry I was really tempted to clone out the lens flares, however, since basic rules stated that I may NOT: "spot-edit your entry, except to remove sensor dust or hot pixels." I assumed this would be illegal..

However, this photograph in the same competition did indeed clone out lens flares, and must have been validated since it was indeed an HM..

Therefore, I feel as though I didn't perform in this challenge nearly as well as I could have (those lens flares were HORRIBLE), and since the rules seemed to be against it I didn't do it.. Now I regret that..

Please, SC, would you edit the Basic rules to make it clear that I will not be DQ'd for spot editing lens flare.. I would strongly prefer to continue DQ free, so I won't do it until you specifically note that it's legal in the rules - but be clear on it, that if this is considered legal, then the rules really need updating..

My guess without knowing more is that the photog's comments on that entry were simply misleading. He may have used a non-spot-editing technique to clean up the lens flare. I can't see how spot editing for lens flare would be remotely okay under Basic.

ETA: Also, don't assume that validation is complete yet.
ETA2: Frisca's post came just before ETA1. ~_~

Dear Cory --

That image has not been validated, and will likely be DQ'd for the lens flare removal. You had the rules right in the first place -- don't let someone else make you doubt what is written in plain language.

Ahh well then.. My mistake... I had figured since it was over a week old they had likely been validated...

Well...you could have, of course, asked me. It's not like I don't participate in the forums. :D

And yes, it has been DQ'ed, yay! Pure laziness on my part...should have read the Basic Editing rules again.

edit: It's still better than your image, though... :-P

???

You got 5/116, 6.646, a 2nd highest in your profile. In the top 10, your photo (and david's) were the only two of its class (night shot) and were far superior over the other similar shots.

Personally, I like to see lens flares every now and then, reminds me that we're still using some good ole physics. The small aperture really takes over the lens flares in your photo.

Just trying to say, its a great shot, don't beat yourself over the flares.

Hmm...we should have a lens flare side challenge!

I like the more restrictive rules as they force me to learn neat tricks that work with global (fast) adjustments.

The restrictions worked, and you got an HM. Congrats :)

Personally, I think basic rules should allow for the cloning out of lens flares as you mentioned in your OP.

I'm sorry that you were DQ'd... I thought you had a wonderful image.

Thanks everyone, I'm super glad to have my first HM, but I'm damn sorry it came at the cost of david_c's DQ...

In any case, I'm honored that everyone enjoyed it - I certainly had fun shooting it (and yeah, I definitely do like restrictive rules,, I just love clearly restrictive rules :) - Which, in the end, it turns out that they were...
