A friend of mine recently got a new roommate who moved out from Florida. She was here for a whirlwind of around 3 weeks, give or take, then yesterday, she found out that her mother's 5 year battle with cancer will likely come to a close within a week.
She went back home already, and I'm not really sure if the situation socially merits a card, but I feel that it ought to.
I'm not entirely sure if others that knew her here are going to do anything, but since this is Asia, it's not going to be all that easy to just walk into my local hallmark and pick up a nice card.
I decided that I could use the practice, so I'm going to quietly make one up myself and if nobody else has made something, I'll pass it around and get my friend to send it in.
What I could use though is a pic that I can print on a medium-large sized card (one side). The size will probably be 6x8 or thereabouts.
I will take care of the rest myself.
My idea for the theme of the card is 'courage' and I'd like to be careful with any sort of parent-child content.
I want to find a pic that represents courage that could be applied to any member of the family, but especially the daughter and possibly the mother.
I'd like to look at prints under 20 bucks if possible. I'm not very familiar with dpcprints.
If you have a suggestion, that would be great.
I am looking to pass this card around on Thursday evening (my time) and I have a few other things that need to be arranged for it, so time is a little urgent.
Thank you to any who take the time to make a suggestion.

With a Thursday deadline, DPC Prints doesn't enter into it; you can't order from them and take delivery that fast. So you need a file you can get printed locally, where you are. You're welcome to anything in my portfolio, if anything suits your purpose, but I'm not at home and I don't have access to my archived files, so only the ones I've done down here in the Caribbean are available in a larger size than 800 pixels right now :-(
I'm sure someone else will lend a hand.

I don't think I'll have anything that suits your need, but if you find anything in my portfolio that does ping me a pm and I can send a print size file. |

I wish I had something that was suitable but I don't. Sorry to hear what your friend and her mother is going through. My mother has been been battling cancer for the past 14 years. I would be devastated if I received that kind of news. My heart and prayers go out to her and her family. I think a card is a nice idea. Shows you are thinking of her in her time of need. |

My portfolio is not likely to have anything you want, however, if you want it, just let me know... |

Thanks.
I hadn't realized that about DPC.
Part of the difficulty for me is #1 - She was here for such a short time, I only actually talked to her a few times, although each time was a good chunk of the day... and it's easy to make fast friends here. #2 - I actually need some ideas about the idea of "Courage". I'm coming up with thematic ideas for the style of card and text effects that I'd like to do, but I'm still running blank on picture ideas...
But she is good friends with a friend of mine who is quite a bit closer and I might be in the best position to actually make something like this. I'd like to find a way for the local community that did get to know her (better than I) to express their thoughts and feelings too.
When the card is finished, I will actually back out of the loop and it won't actually be 'from me'. Which is another reason why I don't want to use any of my own photos (the other being that I'm not confident about their quality or suitability)...
Thanks again for the kind words.
I will browse your portfolios tomorrow evening or Thurs. :) |

Thanks again to all.
I ended up leaving the funky text effects out of it. I went and found a 1600x1200 wallpaper on Google images (pumped up a bit and tidied up with PS) with a nice blue sky and some bright yellow sunflowers in a pleasant arrangement. No printed writing, just empty space for people to write their thoughts. This (hopefully) will make the card more about the people's words rather than the card itself, which is the purpose anyhow.
It's amazing how hard it is to find something that matches your mind's eye when you want it a specific way.
Also amazing was how difficult it was to just do the fold correctly. DANG. That's almost an art in itself.
In the end, the fold shifted a tiny bit in the envelope and I felt like a bit of a doofus handing off a card with a 99.5% straight fold. A nice bright, white line on the edge, just thick enough to see and distract. But not if it's open...
I gave the card to my friend and she's going to pass it around.
Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts and your assistance.
For such a small thing, I've spent a surprising amount of time biting my nails on trying to do it right. |
