Art just sparked an idea...

It would be fun to have a challenge where the rules were only released AFTER the rollover - Essentially shoot blind and see how well it matches the eventual theme..

This sounds like an incredibly fun idea!

Does sound fun - would DNMC come into it?
08/02/2010 07:30:15 PM · #4
i guess its interesting, as far as voting goes tho, people would basically be rating it as a f/s and it would just be more of a novelty to see how the shots matched up to the theme

Well, you could have the theme pop up after rollover - then the voters know what they're voting on.

I really like that idea. I agree that it will probably just be a free study while taking shots, but it would put a very interesting twist on voting. And voting needs an interesting twist from it's normal interesting twist.

The title could actually be a fill in the blanks of sorts to give out clues. Like, figure out what fits that fragment of sentence best.. Don't have a clue how that would work though.

What has it got in its pocketssss?

I like it. You need some more definition on how it would work though... then it might be a challenge very soon!

A long time ago, 3-4 years, I floated the exact same idea; I called it the "Crapshot Challenge", and the idea was that the subject wouldn't be announced until after all the entries were in and voting started. Only those lucky enough to have grabbed a shot that happened to meet the challenge would get a decent score.

The idea never gained any traction, LOL. Maybe it will this time around...

Sounds like a great idea for those of us (you) with 83503857035 challenge entries. For those that have a few entries and are trying to improve their average... they probably won't take the risk. I don't really care, so I'm in.

i think it would be hilarious!

I seriously like the idea of some good plain silliness. DPC could do with some lightening up from time to time, and this would fit the bill perfectly!

Also good for those of us that going down isn't an issue. How low can you go?? I like the pocket idea..

Well, there you go. "Crapshot" v. "Secret". Sometimes titles do make a difference. ;-Þ

All you have to do is look at the challenges on the front page right now.

More silliness is a good thing. Viva le idiocé! (Typed in my best mock French)

Does this mean we submit shots and only know if they fit the challenge after we start voting? Haha. Sounds hilarous.
To be safe the shots will need a bit of minimalist, maximialist, vibrance, black and white, leading lines, shallow and wide DOF (might be hard to do that one), etc, etc, et.

Exactly right! One variant I had considered in the earlier suggestion was to have a "pool" of 10 different topics, but have the shooters unaware of which one would be selected after the entries closed. If you imagine, for example:

1. Landscape
2. Portrait
3. Rubber Ducky
4. Woody
5. Vegetable
etc etc...

Then, is your best bet to try to include all 10 in one image? Hilarious...

Or, how about:

1. Elation
2. Despair
3. Resignation
4. Determination
5. Nonchalance
etc etc...

Imagine the staged crowd scene for all those :-)

You could say between 3 and 5 of these objects will be chosen. So you're forced to stack stuff in. Could be hilarious... or disterous.

Problem with trying to fit every possibility in, is that then you will get low voted for all the "distracting elements". Assuming the topic is "rubber ducky:, the comments will read things like: "The rubber ducky is not quite prominent enough. It does not really appear to be the subject. Marginally DNMC, IMO"

Ideally, the person would shoot a nice picture of a rubber duck - then if they were lucky the topic would end up being ducks or rubber, or toys, or yellow, or items, or.....

--

Clearly, the given topic would need to be fairly broad in order to ensure that many of the entries will be appropriate in some respect..

I do think broad challenge descriptions would be the only appropriate choice for something like this...

Hell, we could even have a few side challenges to test the idea (of course voting would be absent..)

The whole point is to have some blatant DNMC's and make it funny. Why change it to a "regular" challenge?
