Ok as the subject of this thread suggest I am looking to get permission to access a site. There is this abandoned hospital that was built around the turn of the century. This building was closed in the 1980's or early 90's. It would be a great place to go photograph...inside and out. Has anyone here dealt with getting permission to go into abandoned buildings or do you just go. The last time I went in....(not exactly legally)... it looked like everyone just dissappeared. All of the furniture and equipment was left. The operating rooms were still intact...etc. It's a real creepy type of place. Also would I need a building release form signed by the authorizing individual that would allow me to photograph it.

My main thing is, I don't want to go to jail or get a big fine for tresspassing. The last time I went in I was in high school and not too overly concerned with the law.

Not sure of US law, but in UK I would contact local authorities ie, building department, health or town/city planning to get info on ownership of the building. Don't trespass as photogs are in enough trouble already:) with all being terrorists and subversives. Ask around the area as well.

Not much help really:)

You should be able to locate the legal owner through your county Tax Assessor's office or else the Clerk/Recorder's office. You might also contact the local police/sheriff's office, since they'll often have such buildings on their patrol schedules -- they'd probably know who to call if there was trouble.

Most of my efforts to get permission to photograph in various places has resulted in a flat "no" because they are worried about liability. I might hurt myself and sue them.

You might ask NikonJeb, I think he has personal knowledge on this matter.

No release forms could be signed???? Doctors have them signed all the time incase they screw up.

You can't sign away your right to sue.

Look for an emergency contact phone number on the outside of the fence or building. The county or city tax office is another good place to begin.
When you get to the right party, the people who control the real estate, tell them that you are a photographer, and ask if they would like you to photograph the property for them to update their records, with the understanding that you get to keep a copy of the photos.
If you can determine who holds the insurance on the place, then they may be interested in having you photograph it as well.
Be aware that some "abandoned" buildings now have alarm systems. It's cheaper than posting a guard, and reduces insurance expense too.
Hope that you can get in.

This place has never had guards and no alarm system. The police do patrol by the place. It is owned by the state I believe...I am going to try to get the proper contact info to gain admittance. This would be a great building to have a GTG..so everyone keep your ears open and maybe I can have some assistance taking pics if I can get it approved.
