I already have a Canon 350D, but recently It fell and broke :( I have roughly $1000 coming to me from my income tax, so im looking to pick up a new camera body. I need something that I can use my current lenses on. Something with more megapixels, and more FPS... what would you guys suggest?
edit: to add, Im looking to buy used, not new.

By those parameters? Clearly the 50D.. And you might be able to get a deal through the canon loyalty program since you have a non-functional 350D.. Should drop the price well below $1000, might even be enough room for an 85 1.8 or something... |

Last fall I purchased a 1D mark II from a well respected member here for less than $1,000, few scuffs on the outside but.. .
BTW. more MP is not necessarily better, my 1D@ 8.5 MP provides consistently better results (understatement) than my 400D@ 13.3MP |

Ya I was thinking about a 1d Mark II, ive seen quite a few for under $1000. I actually only have 1 remaining lens (my 50mm 1.8 broke when my 350D fell :( ). Will my Tamron 17-55mm 2.8 work on a 1D Mark II?
edit: Also, when buying new lenses, how can I tell if they will work on the full frame 1D?

You can actually pick up a 1DMKIIn for less than $1000 in great shape with accessories now. The larger screen and some added features are a nice addition. Head over to fredmiranda.com and hit the buy and sell board and find a respected seller with lots of feedback and enjoy the 1 series mojo. :D
Matt
The tamron will mount to the 1D but might vignette because it's made for crop cameras. And the 1D is not full frame only the 1Ds series are full frame.

The 1D MII is a 1.3 crop, still, don't know about your Tamron, but in Canon you want EF not EFS..
LOL, Hi Matt, still love it :)..

People never understand the mojo that these 1 series cameras carry until they use them.......Even now when I grab my 5DMKII I cringe......but I still use it even though I really want a 1DsMKIII. LOL

| so the whole EF and EF-S thing, can both lenses be used on the 1D Mark II, but the EF-S will just have some vingetting? Or will they not work at all? Im asking because I really wanted to pick up either a sigma 10-20mm or a canon 10-22mm, but they're EF-S lenses. Will they still work, or is there another wide angle lens that is an EF? |

I don't *think* EF-s lenses are ok on the 1.3 crops..
I do however, happen to have a very nice EF mount Sigma 12-24 for sale right here... :) I'd even drop the price to $750 :)

Canon lenses that are made for 1.6X crop sensor use a propriety mount that keeps them from mounting to APS-H and full frame mounts. Third party lenses use the standard EF mount but are designed with a smaller image circle optimized for 1.6 crop sensors. So while they will mount on 1.3 and FF camera they won't produce full images on the sensor. |

If you are wanting to buy new or refurb the 50D is a great value for the money. I have never used a FF model, so I can't offer major feedback on that option. I got my 50D on the previously mentioned Canon loyalty program for $629 late last year. There are pluses and minuses to everything. A full frame model will give cleaner images (the 50D is no slouch and I immediately noticed the difference going to it from the 350D and 20D) and have some higher end features. You will also have less choice of lenses as you can only use EF but not EF-S, and the body is much larger, which may of may not be an issue. Me, I'm a bargain hunter and I like the ability to take advantage of the greater lens choices the crop sensor offers. I think it will be a long time, if ever, until I feel a need to go to a FF model. Either way you decide, I think you'll be pleased with the upgrade.

| Ok, so which would take better pictures, if they were both using the same lens. The 1d mark II or 50D? Since I only have one lens, it wouldn't be that big of a deal to switch over to the EF lenses. |

... out of it!
I thought you'd said that and I almost throw my 350D and get $1000 for myself... Dang... Tax return ey?
I would go for 50D or even 40D, they both excellent cameras for similar prices. |

Just a little bump. I got my income tax cheque today (woot), so im almost ready to buy.\
Im still torn between the 1d mark ii and the 50D. Both are roughly the same price (with the 1d being slightly more). Pixel count aside, would the 1D produce sharper pictures over the 50D (assuming they were both using the same lens)? |

The AF systems of the two are not even in the same ballpark. It would produce more IN focus images based on that. But if you are never taking photos of anything that moves that wouldn't matter much

Man, shut up or you'll have me out buying a 1 series...
Honestly though, I can say shooting birds in flight @ 200mm is not a problem with the 50D's AF, so that 1D AF must be some awesome shat. |

| I really think you should read more reviews 50D vs. 40D. I am pretty sure you will be happier with 40D. |
