When I was in high school I had a friend who went over to Philly every Saturday with a cooler full of water and about 10 dozen pretzels. He used to make about 5 grand every summer.

This is very, very true. I must say that you should indeed consider this...

Somehow I don't think that will deter him.

Again, I suggest checking city ordinances as there are certainly regulations regarding street vendors and child labor.

That's actually a very good point! I'll be sure to check on that, thanks Karen! :D

And good news! I've hooked up with some carts I can pull along with my bicycle for about $40. YES!

Actually. Everyone I know has a PC just because it's cheap. Tower PC's have a lot of bugs, and Laptop PC's have a lot of bugs. I'm buying a Mac for the ease-of-use, the processor, the massive amounts of RAM, the big HD, and the large screen. After this, I'm gogin ot use parallels to dual-boot Windows XP or WIndows 7.

That's actually my target for next summer! I am currently enrolled in a great program called FreeGeek that I am volunteering to build low-end computers for the communities (libraries, schools, etc.). Next summer I'll take my learned skills to the next level and build a high-end PC, then take Windows 7 off my MacBook. After that, my Macbook will be for travel, show-off, photos, movies, editing etc. And I'll have (hopefully) build a gaming PC with LOADS of shit packed in.

If you are going to use a cooler you need to think about using dry ice, dry ice will keep things a lot colder for longer periods of time. Make sure you factor the cost of the ice into the cost of doing business.

That is PERFECT! I am sooo doing that! It would be cool to see the vapor rise out of the cooler when it was opened. That would attract a lot of attention.

he's going to sell ice to rich people at what price? $1.50 - $2 a piece? i don't think he's going to get very far above those prices. lets assume he can buy the ice cream at 50c each. that's between 800 and 1200 bars he needs to sell

Well, I have 3 other kids circling different parts of Portland. I'm buying Ice Cream for .50 cents apiece and selling for $2.00 to $4.00 based on prices of other ice-cream salesmen in my neighborhood. And I already have $1000. So 1200 bars is not exactly right. You're getting ahead of yourself to part of the discussion that I gave no information about!? Think before you speak. Please.

That's a great idea! When summer is over, I'll sell Pretzels and soda at school! This discussion has been SO helpful to my business I can't even thank all of you before my throat would go hoarse.

I think I answered everyone's concerns about my business. I'll get going in two days! If you live in NE Portland, have an ear open for this song.

Many schools are banning soda and other high-sugar drinks. Consider flavored waters (no- to low-sugar) or 100% juice (really almost as bad as soda, but it's hard to say "no" to Mother Nature).

Make sure your school doesn't have an exclusive with Coke or Pepsi or Nestle -- you may not be able to conduct business on school grounds.

If you are a computer geek, then consider offering tutorial and/or repair/maintenance services, perhaps to your classmates' parents ... you can charge a lot more for that than for ice cream, and without much of a captial investment.

I admire your initiative, and I hope that you can work out a plan that helps you achieve your goals. I enjoyed listening to your chosen music. Good luck, stay safe.

The whole thing is off guys. It turns out, Business Management certificates require that you are age 14 or above, and cost 100 dollars per year. I thought they were 13 and above, and cost $8.33 per months... UGH!!!

Wow, even as someone who thoroughly enjoys mindless dance music, your choice would have sent me running for the hills. *shudder*

Don't let this detail stop you..

Find an older friend who'll sign the docs, you pony up the $$ and he helps run the thing for a cut of the profits.

ETA: alternatively, you can just do it the old fashioned way and rely on the fact no-one in their right mind is going to ticket a kid your age for trying to work and make a buck... Especially if you explain that you TRIED to get the correct documents and certifications, but you were told that you weren't old enough.. :) (This is absolutely what I would do in your position.)

Wilful disregard for a legal avenue to pursue proceedings, yes? Not sure I'd sign with this advice...

Never said it was good advice, it's simply what I'd do if they told me I was too young to get the proper docs. And seriously, do you really expect that there's really a high probability of him getting into any sort of trouble (other than being to to quit)? I just don't see it, then again, it's different where I live... The guy who owns the ice cream truck probably doesn't have all of the proper certifications and licenses, hell, he probably avoids paying his taxes, and might not even have a valid drivers license.. So, again, YMMV as you are clearly in a very different bit of our society where such things may not be as well tolerated...

Ever hear of "Self Justification" Cory? It would seem that this is exactly what you are advocating here.

Sorry, but from this old fella's perspective I am more inclined to agree with the previous poster. Seeking to advance is indeed a laudable intent, but not at all costs.

I feel a sense of injustice here. He tried to do it the right way, they told him he would not be allowed to do it the right way..

It's shit like this that turns kids to crime, and the same sort of lack of opportunities applies to people with a criminal record, thus the start of a vicious cycle.

---

All of that aside, don't you think it's entirely likely that part of the reason for that age is before that they figure it's all part of childhood and shouldn't require a permit and certification?

I mean really, who the hell is going to prosecute a kid for trying to make an honest buck (albeit it without a permit)..
