Has anyone gotten an email about their images being poublished on the state books as "thumbnails"? I got a notice about it for 2 state books, but it sounds suspiciously like some advertising budget where they give you the books for free in hopes of future sales. But maybe I am being too cynical.

It's a scam. Even worse it's spam scam...

The beginning line of what I was sent. Nothing about "thumbnails." I entered this contest, too, though.

It is my pleasure to inform you that you have 2 picture(s) in the upcoming Colorado 24/7 book of the America 24/7 project. Congratulations.

Same as Paganini here. Not sure if the book being a "scam." I did see the National one in Border's etc.

Books by dk are really high quality.

I don't think it's a scam but if you have a picture in the book, most like ly you would purchase it.

America 24/7 cover can be customed with one of your own pictures.

Actually it's free, they'll send the book to me.

dacrazyrn: i got 3 images in Texas and 1 in Kansas, i think they're all "thumbnail" images, which are small images that run across the page (on teh national book there are those as well). Guess you got 2 bigger photos to be published, shame on me :)

This is what they wrote:
>> It is my pleasure to inform you that one or more of your images have been
> included as thumbnails in an America 24/7 state book. The state books are
> laid out similarly to the national book and include strips of small images
> running across the tops of many pages. Your image will appear there.
> Congratulations.

then..

CONTACT INFORMATION VERIFICATION
>> Since your image is included in an America 24/7 state book, we will be
> sending you a complimentary copy of the book in November 2004. To receive
> it, you MUST update and/or confirm your shipping information by JULY 9,2004.
> If you are planning to move between now and then please provide me with an
> address that will be valid in November i.e. your parents' address, your work
> address etc. I have thousands of photographers to keep track of so it is up
> to you to make sure I have your correct mailing address. If you don't, I
> can't guarantee you will receive a copy of the book. Also, we can only ship
> to street addresses NOT post office boxes. Thanks.

And when i asked for the images, Kim wrote back and gave me the image numbers i gave them last year, so should be the right source. I think the "thumbnails" are used to get people to spread the word and bring their sales up, but supposedly i should ge ta free book.

I received an email from them on 6/10 which was very similar to Paganini's stating they had chosen two of my images for the NH book. It said nothing about where the photos would be used, but it states that they are sending me a complimentary copy of the book.

if you go look at the National book that is in book stores now you will see what they are talking about. I saw it at Barnes and Noble

Some images get a partial page with smaller "thumbnail" images at the top of the page, or along the side or bottom of the page.

So from reading the copy of the email you posted here, your image/smight be one of the smaller pics that be across the top of one of the pages with several other pages.

The email I got about my image did not state "thumbnail" so Im just guessing my image gets a page or par of a page to its self.

this is the most recent email I got

"Congratulations on the selection of your image(s) for one of the America 24/7 state books! These are captivating volumes about life in each of the 50 states. Taken together, they are a truly outstanding accomplishment. This is largely because of your vision. We could not have done it without you.

All 50 books will be published September 27, 2004 and we are gearing up a massive publicity effort. As always, the America 24/7 PR team will operate on a grassroots level, and we need your help to spread the word.

Would you like to be a spokesperson for your state book? ===============================================
As a spokesperson, you could be called upon to participate in media events promoting your book. This will give you the opportunity to talk about your images and your experiences on this remarkable project.  Events may include bookstore appearances or radio, print, and TV interviews. After all, your images are the foundation for these incredible books.

Due to the large scale of the project, we have several publicists working on the fall launch. If you would like to be a spokesperson for your state book, please email your appropriate publicist listed below."

Congratulations James, Rick, Tony & Tracy.
Do any of you have the pictures they selected in your DPC portfolio?

I was informed the America 24/7 project judges selected 2 of my pictures to be included in the thumbnail strips of the California edition. I contacted Kim and she confirmed which they were. I've visited their 'operations' for the project and believe that there is no scam involved with this whatsoever, as they are doing, and have done, exactly what they said they would. I purchased a cover for my National edition. It was printed incorrectly, the photograph looked fine yet the punctuation marks in the text I provided did not print properly. That was not the fault of America/24/7 . I'm going to try to get the printer to re-do the cover for me.
I just received this note from Kim...

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the note. I do remember you but didn't remember you were so sick. I can't believe you actually pushed yourself for the project. I appreciate the effort. You got two images included in the CA 24/7 strips. Thanks for the offer to help. We are actually wrapping up but if we need anything I will let you know.
Best,
Kim

Cool, this thread made me check one of my junk mail accounts and I found out I too had been sent an email saying "one or more" of my images had been selected for the California edition and I get a free book. I'm wondering how tiny these thumbnails will be. It would be nice if they were large enough to see what the photo is about.

Free is good.

I've got the National book and the thumbnails are bigger than the ones that people are voting on if they are using a screen resolution larger that 1024x768. My Mom still has the book so I can't refer to it yet there where at least one if not 2 of the Thumbnails on each page that were also shown in a larger version on the same page to help balance the 'collage'. I do not know more than that but I'll ask Kim if I see her tomorrow ... The only distinction I'm aware of here is that some of the great pictures are getting a full page and others mention a Thumbnail Strip... In the National book they listed a name & information on each of the strip thumbnails. I consider it an honor to be selected. When my eyes heal up and I can take good pictures again I'll be even more proud to get a ribbon on DPC.
