can someone explain what technique/software is used to create extremely textured gritty look to the two top weathered winners?

Not sure about the first one, but I'm pretty sure the 2nd place was done with Topaz. You could always pm them and ask.

I don't know if bnilesh uses Topaz or not, but I think I got a similar appearance to my street portrait entry as many of his possess, and I did use some Topaz adjust.


A very modest amount, however. I believe I used the "Photo pop" preset and cranked up the "regions" slider a bit more. I also used a little of PaintShop Pro's clarify adjust, which is similar in nature, but not identical. I've found that several different adjustments at smaller values tend to combine much better than a larger amount of one adjustment.
