Considering that my first vote was a 1, I am reasonably pleased.

I know the feeling on that. I spent a long time looking, but it's not as exciting redoing someone else's photo. However, found something and did something in the end that I'm quite pleased with.
Down a bit from early this morning -- still very few votes.

I figured I'd ask here.
How are we meant to vote on this? There are a few ways I can think of: the quality of the replication of the original, or on the 'bettering' of the image from then to now, or just on the image as we see it?
I was going to enter macwilyum's
I went though those who commented on my photos and his was one of the few that I could attempt easily enough. I had a very busy weekend so couldn't do it though.

I'm confused. My image for this challenge is far better than the original and it is going to have a lower score than the original. I think people don't want the image to be too near the original and are mostly ignoring/disregarding the quality of the new photo and the improvement achieved over the original.
Very disappointing.

I started with a 1 and now have a low 5.something. Not one comment. I think I know why mine is getting slammed but I can't say because it will give away my entry. Personally, I think it's a fabulous image and should be getting a 6+ score! My only hope now is for a posthumous ribbon. |

Wow, you got a 1 too, huh? That makes at least four people who started with 1s... and that's just the people who posted so far in this thread.
I can understand using the full range of votes during scoring, but I would contend that under no reasonable rubric would there be four or more photos in this challenge deserving a 1. Whoever it is that's passing out ludicrously low votes should be called out and publicly tarred and feathered. What's really odd is that this is a member challenge, so someone is paying for the privilege of being anonymously bitter, superior, and spiteful.
And that will be my rant for the day. |

To be honest, I'm going to just vote on each image as a free study. I don't have the time or inclination to research each shot to see if it really was a first shot. If they want these special kind of challenges in the future, they need to add a field where we can put the image ID of the original so we can compare them in the voting screen. |

Kevin - fair enough. You're right, it really would be helpful to have a link for each image back to the source/original. I noticed that in Chrome I was unable to cut and paste image tags from titles of photos in this challenge. Didn't make things easier.
Also, viewed from the perspective of a free study, I can see why I have such a middling score. Dang it, I knew I should have submitted a dramatic wide-angle landscape.

If the shot is only so-so, I'm not bothering to look up the original, and just scoring it as I would a free study. If it's a good shot, I'm looking up the original. I'm thinking it's completely acceptable to either try to duplicate the image or to change it up. But I still think it should have something to do with the original. If it's just the same subject, but has absolutely nothing in common with the original, then I think it skirts the intent of the challenge.

How long ago was the original? I did a shot from back in 2003 -- things scored a heck of a lot higher then. The original got a 6.9, I think it would be more of a 5.5-5.7 shot now.

No, it is much more recent than that. I've noticed also about the scores coming down through the time.
My score seems to be going to be the same or lower than the original entry. Don't understand! But this is DPC, who understands it?

So far this is beating the original's score, but it's far too early to predict where it will end up. |

Guess my moaning worked.. I'm now "up" to a 5.4
Now, after the fact, I realize that I probably shouldn't have picked ___________ because ___ had a _______ image and ________. THERE, now I feel better.
