Hi all:) I've recently got the d700. the only lens i have is a 55mm 1.4 prime (really good, but limiting because of the work i do doing storyboards and prospectuses for sports colleges and schools)
I really want to buy the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor but dont have the money for it right now but quite keen to start shooting with it or something similar. I got a dx lens from work but didnt like the dx crop thing , dont like the fact that i wasnt able to utilize the camera's full capability. Anyway, like i said above, i dont have the money to buy it right now and so i'm looking for a tempory, more cost effective equivilent till i get the money saved up. so far, i'v stumbbled across the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM. Can someone please tell me what they think? ALSO, would this lens be compatible with the fx sensor of my d700? Your help would be greatly appreciated!
(p.s. sorry if my terminology is a bit rubbish, this is my first digital slr that i'v purchased for proffesional use, i'm still learning some of the basics, though every bit of advice is useful, please go easy on me! lol!) |

How about the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di? Good quality, can be had for a reasonable price (used or new), and can work with full frame or APS-C cameras.
I think the "DC" designation on Sigma lenses indicates they are made for APS-C sensors, so the Sigma you mentioned would not be the best choice. |

I have the 24-70 2.8. I know you said you can't afford it right now but please keep putting some $ away for a future purchase ! I bought and sold several lens' while saving for this baby ! An extra job I did over several weekends didn't hurt either !

Second the recommendation of the Tamron 28-75mm. I got it for my 20D, couldn't afford canon's 24-70 at the time, and I'm still using it now on my 5D, which is full frame. It's a very good value, excellent lens at an affordable price.

Third the recommendation for the Tamron 28-75. I recently purchased the D700 also and I was struggling to find a wide angle lens to put on it. The Tamron was one of my top choices until a series of fortunate events allowed me to get my first choice, the Nikon 17-35 f/2.8. If not for my recent good fortune I probably would have bought the Tamron despite having bought too many "second choices" for my cropped sensor cameras before finally buying what I wanted for them. |

Hi...
I have the 24-70 Nikkor and it is really a great lens, i've heard good opinions about the 28-75 Tamron, but i prefer Nikkor lenses... what about an 28-70 Nikkor used? is another great lens for me... here, in Italy, is not too diffuclt to find it, i do not know in the USA... |

I own both the Tamron and bought a used 28-70 later. Image quality is very good on the Tamron. Very sharp, very good contrast.
Differences?
Build quality is subpar on the Tamron, below that of the Sigma lenses I own. Autofocus is very slow, especially compared to the 28-70. If you really need something to shoot with now, the Tamron will work, but that means you're that much further from affording a 28-70 or 24-70. |
