Randy:

Get off of this black and white thing already!
Seems like I'm stuck in black and white mode. Anybody ever experience
this problem?
Sheesh my current submission for Newspaper is black and white!
Got to commit to a colour shot on the next one.

don't beat yourself up. b&w is a wonderful tool to express your subject.
some people prefer b&w... maybe you do and don't know it yet?
:)

You seem to be doing fine with your B&W so I recomend that you continue on that.
I very often prefer B&W and unless I´m trying to draw attention to some beautiful or special colors I convert my image to B&W most of the time.

You should not try to force your photos to be any different, and there are many reasons.

1. Your doing outstandingly well at this moment with B/W
2. Many of the best photographers of the world only do B/W
3. If a lot of your photos are B/W then it is that way for a reason, that is where your mind is.
4. If you try to force your photos to be different from what your heart tells you then you will probably not take as good and artistik photos.

So my advice, what ever you do, don't try to force your work to change, if it does naturally, then don't fight it either.

There is nothing wrong with black and white images, except when you convert good color images to black and white just because. Black and white can add drama, emphasize textures and shapes, removes color clashing elements, and so on. If you are making everything black and white because you want to instead of deciding if that particularly image would look better in black and white or color or even shooting in a black and white frame of mind then that would be bad.

We see plenty of that here, along with trying to salvage not-so-good color images by converting.

dpc does a pretty darn good job of teaching how to do techniques, such as shallow DoF, B&W, sel-desat, negative space, motion blur, painting with light, etc. But we have a lot of room for improvement in teaching when the various techniques are appropriate, when they will produce a superior image.

That gives me idea - how about a B/W challenge, then you could really learn about what works and what does not work.

Randy,

Rather than quitting b&w, how about quitting smoking?

Well, there have been three:

Black & White
Black and White Portrait
Duotones

Not saying it should not be done, but for some reason the "Powers That Be'® do not like to repeat challenges. There have been some, but very few. It has been over year since the last one though.

For the record, I am all for repeating certain types of challenges; the composition or technique focused ones. They are what I look at most when I am learning a certain element. I am focusing on leading lines now, so I am starting to go through the Leading Lines challenge and wishing there were more entries.

If you feel it is time to move on from B&W, by all means explore other areas; but do not do so just because you feel you need to in order to grow. If you have not done so, might help to look over the past duotone challenges.

Besides, getting of the "B&W thing" is not on your to-do list. Stay focused, halfway through the year and your half done. :p

I've heard it said in several forums that making a GOOD b/w photograph is usually more difficult than making a good color photograph...

For the record.

I quit smoking two and a half years ago when I got a life and started
running and working out.

I still like the odd good scotch every now and then.

Yeah, they were before mine as well. I really wish they were not so resistant to repeating the technique focused challenges. I do not care much for the topic based, but the technique ones I like a lot.
