I am not discuraging people from enterting im just saying that its ok if you didnt get a picture for a challenge because there will be lots more to enter. |
I actually saw a shot exactly like that in my local newspaper. So, even if your closed mind thinks it can't be in a newspaper, my local newspaper would argue otherwise. Give people a break.
Edit: I did not enter this challenge, by the way.

It does? I don't see that "rule" anywhere. Plenty of newspapers print color photos these days. And some (like USA Today) have been doing color for a long time. |

oh-o..I meant "the challegen rules didn't say it had to be in B/W" of course!! It's not the point that I think a newspaper photo must be in black and white, it's the point that with all these topics saying: you don't meet the challenge you *fill in bad word*, I got confused so I thought if I turn in a colour photo they'll probably say it should have been in B/W and if I turn in a B/W photo they'll probably say it should have been in colour (and that's what's happening now).
It's a good lesson though: always do your own thing!

Originally posted by ConcreteDonkey: I just have one thing to say .... You DONT have to enter every Challenge. I just sat here for the last hour or two voteing on all the pictures for Newspaper, And i must say that a good 60-70% would never make it to print. A lot of people are posting nice pictures and giving them a crafty newspaper title. Witch cheapins the challenge. So please if you didnt get the perfect pic for the challenge dont enter. there will be plenty more challenges to enter. | That was my take so I didn't enter. I'm glad to hear somebody voice this thought. I just poked my nose in the photos so far but was surprised how many looked like family snapshots. I'll look closer in the next day or so and vote.

So, let's just say this is someone's very first photo-journalism assignment. People still expect that person to turn in top-notch, ribbon-copping, publishable photos, or not enter at all?
This is a learning site ... if more pictures this week are "below average" than usual, it shows that we as a community put less emphasis and effort into photo-journalism than some other genres, and the lack of practice shows. So what?
If you were paying for admission to a gallery to view photos, you might have an "expectation of quality" as the images have been preselected by a curator. If you are a teacher grading assignments, you take what you get, and offer what suggestions for improvement you can. I think the challenges do and should more closely resemble class assignments than curated galleries.
