Actually... after I sent it in for a cleaning and mentioned the lag on the shutter and they couldn't find anything wrong, a few weeks later the entire shutter mechanism failed. Not really related to anything they fixed but because I had mentioned the the shutter lag problem they hsld my shutter failure 2 month later "under work warranty" so I got the shutter repair at no charge. So Canon has been VERY generous to me in that respect.
That said even a shutter mech rebuild did not fix the shutter lag and sometimes not firing issues at all. It was later that I sent it in again for the shutter BUTTON. I figured out the correct way to word it for them after talking to a Canon Rep in person when I was at the factory for a mere while you wait cleaning. She told me make it clear that it is the actual button itself that has the problem, not the shutter mech. And because I had the vertical grip with the second button I had already proved it.

I had a 30D that did the same thing. I had it in for the shutter and they couldn't find anything wrong. It's the button itself, not the shutter or the lenses, but the button. How do I know this? I also had a vertical grip with another button on it and that other button NEVER failed me. Not ever, not once. Lots of 30Ds had that problem (I had tow and both did it, but one only rarely). If you have to ever send it in again specifically tell them about the BUTTON. (and maybe rent a vertical grip to test out the theory on your camera. Oh... and buy another battery. It never hurts. |
I have a feeling that you're completely right -- though I'm hoping it's related enough to the other shutter issues that I don't get charged for the repair. When you've sent it in four times in one year (little less than a year, actually), you hope you don't have to pay for the repair. This is getting rather ridiculous. |

wow! How lucky is that! Replacing the shutter is an expensive fix. What a good camera for breaking its button first! :)
Just got the email from Canon, they're repairing it for no cost. After this many problems, I would have been irritated if they hadn't. But it's nice to know that it's covered.
If I choose the upgrade to the 7D (which is looking more and more promising: one of my 3 ebay items sold today, and I was able to do some individual photos for the swim team. If the other two items sell, I should be ok.
Also, the cool thing is, they changed the deal -- they'll give me the discount on the 7D, but I don't have to send in my 20D -- so I can sell that. (I don't need 3 cameras :)
So it looks like I might be a 7D owner in a couple of weeks!

It's ordered!!! The 7D is on order and will hopefully arrive tomorrow! I sold stuff on ebay, did a birthday party and swim team photos, had some leftover Christmas money -- I'm so excited!
The 40D came back the day before yesterday. They actually included the evaluation sheet with the camera this time (never seen that before.) For those of you having this problem, the evaluation said:
After testing camera, problem was reproduced intermittently more than once. In all cases the butter button was "hitting a sweet spot" in which the shutter button was not engaging contacts. Recommend replacing shutter release button
the invoice/summary sheet said:
Your product has been examined and it was found that the release button assembly did not operate properly. The release button assembly was replaced and product functions were confirmed.
