Ok, here's the story:

I look at my raw files in photoshop bridge. Anything I want to work on, I assign a star rating. When I go to clean out my files, I delete any unrated photos.

Here's the problem: bridge wasn't working right, and it wasn't allowing me to rate the photos. So I opened the photos, played with them, found one I liked and did some editing. I started running out of space, so I deleted any unrated photo. Which, deleted my original.

Here's the question. I still have the raw file open in photoshop. It says img_1701.cr2 at the top. If I save, it saves it as a photoshop document, and then I wouldn't have my original. Is there any way of getting this raw file back on my hard drive? I can undo back to the opening of the file, so that I haven't made any changes.

Please help!

Check your recycle bin / trashcan, it may still be in there, I've found that most apps when they delete stuff they move it there rather than just delete.

Also, what about your memory card, if it was a recent shoot you might still have it. I don't think there's anything you can do from Photoshop other than keeping the image itself, but that won't be the original.

nope. sorry, forgot to mention that. I already emptied the recycle bin, because I was running out of disk space. And I went to shoot a different idea for the challenge, so I emptied the card.

You will need a file undelete utility

if you have the original open it couldn't have been deleted.

That's what I thought. But it definitely is gone. So I'm thinking that, even though it says cr2 at the top, that it's probably not the RAW file anymore -- that photoshop has already taken over it. But I wasn't sure...

It's probably worth a try -- I could download it to a different drive. Is there one that anyone recommends?

another possibility - check your card.

If you have formatted the card, but not taken any/many new pics, there's a strong chance that you could still recover the pics directly from the card.

I believe ZAR is a tool that works fairly well for this.

I use BadCopy to recover data from formatted (or even half-formatted) cards... it's not free, but it works pretty well for me. You can download a trial copy for free, though, and see if it finds your files.
