Hi DPC'ers,

I've recently discovered a couple of signed Alexander Calders, that appeared to be original, although - in hindsight, they may be prints - although I didn't notice any numbering...

There are two pieces, both very typical Calder, they measure about 3.5-4" x 5-6", not large, but certainly not post-stamps either.

The question here is a matter of purchase price, I've already informed the owner as to what they are (she had no clue, paid $3 at a yard sale... Framed with an unsigned unusual pencil drawing)..

Clearly, I don't need exact figures, just reasonable predictions of value based on both original or lithograph. (I didn't realize until later that Calder did a ton of lithos.. So I didn't check beyond the signature....)

So, I'm hoping someone here knows a bit more than I, or even better, has access to information that I do not.

Thanks in advance,

Cory B.

I think someone will have to see them (or at least pictures of them) to give you an accurate appraisal. Check for an auction house, gallery, or museum in your area -- you can often get a free appraisal for a couple of items.

If they're not to be sold, then contact the wner's homeowner's insurance agent and you should be able to get them appraised for increasing the policy to cover them.

You might try contacting someone at the San Francisco MOMA -- they have a current exhibition featuring works by Calder.

Thanks General.

I think I'm going to buy them, I'm not too worried about the real value, I'm honestly much more concerned with what it will take to own them. :)

I just would like a basis to judge whether or not I'm about to pay too much.
