The firmware on my 40D is Version 1.0.3 and the latest Version is 1.1.1.

Can I simply download this version to my camera or do I need to download the previous versions that were released between the two.

I know this sounds rather stupid, but I have not been able to find an answer to this yet and am hoping someone here knows.

Thanks in advance.

Ray,

The canon website usually has info as to what firmware this can be updated from. At the moment though the canon website is not loading for me.

From the Canon USA site:

Version 1.1.1 firmware is for EOS 40D camera's with firmware up to Version 1.1.0. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.1.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

There is no indication that there is a minimum firmware version required for this to work.

It doesn't sound stupid to me, considering that I knew nothing about firmware updates at all. I'm looking forward to the answers to this.

This means it will work to update any version 1.1.0 or earlier. You're good to go, Ray.

I don't know if my 40D came with a cable to connect it to my computer. If it did, it's hiding real good :) - what is the cable called?

I know that might be a real stupid question but I have ordered things before that I had to send back because I am technically challenged. Thanks for any help.

I think Canon calls their's "USB Interface Cable IFC-200U". At least that's what the cable is called for the 50D on their website...
ETA: Link for Canon's 50d what's in the box. Cable should be the same for the 40D...

The USB cable should have come with the camera. However, you do not need it to do the update. The update file goes on a compact flash card, and following the Canon site instructions, you use the card to update the camera. Make sure your battery has plenty of capacity available. It does not take that long, but if the camera died in the middle of the update it could be very bad.

As mentioned earlier, updates are cumulative. You do not need to do each one, just the latest one.

Thanks so much for the info The_Tourist and ambaker. I didn't have a clue that you could d/l the info on a compact flash card.. really appreciated info.
