I used to do a batch resize in Elements -- it would allow me to specify a width (or height) in pixels, and it would automatically adjust the other size. I can't seem to do that in photoshop (or I can't find it.)

In CS4, when I specify 1000 pixels wide, it wants me to also specify a height. I just want to resize all the pictures so that they're 1000 pixels wide -- I've cropped them to different heights, so I can't specify a single height.

Please help! I have 240 pictures that I need to convert to jpeg 1000 pixels wide, and I'm stuck.

Thanks in advance...

irfanview has much better batch capabilities. you can resize, sharpen, watermark, etc. It's fast and easy. ...and free.

That looks sweet -- I'll have to look into it.

I finally ignored everything and went back to elements and did it there. That does look like a great option in the future. Thanks!

Now I have a smugmug question that I have to go post.

In CS4, are you using File>Scripts>Image Processor? I think I see what you are saying, there is a box for both width and height. I think it will do what you want (though it looks like you already have an alternative).
If you want to fit to a maximum dimension of 1000px, put in 1000px for both height and width. Be aware that this will limit the longest direction to 1000px, so portrait-oriented shots will be narrower than 1000px, but they will be 1000px tall.
If you want them all 1000px wide, put in 1000px for width, and a large number, like 5000px for height. Unless you have pics that are more than five times as tall as they are wide, the width will always rule and the result will be photos that are all 1000px wide.
