I have two pictures, both taken in the same place about a year apart, but the person stood perhaps a bit further away in one of them. Is there a way to "scale" two pictures so they match based on an object in each photo? For instance, can I "measure" the door handle in each and somehow automagically scale the shots so the door handle is the same size in each, therefore giving me the same scale in each?

Perhaps not "automagically" but you should be able to take careful measurements between specific locations within the photos (in pixels) and perform some basic arithmetic to get the scale value, then use Edit > Transform > Numeric and enter the desired value.

The larger the area/distance you use for comparison the more accurate your result should be.

Thanks, Paul. I did something quite similar, but without the math (even though I do like the idea of the math bit.) Took the one shot, put it as a layer over the other shot (it's a start of school year/end of school year thing) and reduced the opacity, then used the transform tool to line them up based on the door frame. My friend did a pretty darn good job getting both kids in the same place!
