How does one take pictures of white animals (Pandas and Polar bears) without blowing out the white areas? I got some killer poses from these creatures but with a bright sun behind them, some areas of the animal got blown out. |

Meter on the green leaves and shoot in RAW mode and bracket your shots.

If you are in the same light, metering on a grey card is ideal -- but cumbersome. If you take the time to find out how far from neutral grey the palm of your hand is, you will never be uncertain about your metering. Each hand will be different so you have to find out if you need to add or subtract a stop of two (or portion of a stop), depending on your skin tone. Also, make sure to use the palm as it is less likely to get tanned.
