Since the release of the little icons for the SC Members, I've become jealous.

I mean, look at that good-looking bunch of folks. I really want my own little icon. From the looks of things, the system is already in place for each user to have their own icon. What if we wanted to design our own icon (within exact specifications, of course, that it be a .gif file, 14x16 pixels in size). I say let us all design our own icon, if we want to. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't be so sure of that. I think the special SC icons might just be a big ol' h-a-c-k. But don't tell D&L I told anybody. =] (That being said, your request has been noted.)

How about having our profile pics in our posts so we can relate faces to the words? now that would be cool!

As soon as everyone gets their internet via cable or DSL we should go for it.

I don't think that will happen anytime too soon.
But 14x16 gif isn't anything too big, like smaller than 500 bytes.
Personal avatars would be cool too, and the people on dialup (like me), could have an option to turn them off. But as EddyG said, this is all discussed in the other forum post.

The personalized icons would be no different than things are right now. We all already have a 14x16 gif associated with us on every post. It just happens to all be the same, boring, 14x16 gif. I want to fire mine up a little.

It IS different, because there are (were) only eight possible images to download in any one thread (the image is usually cached, and doesn't have to be re-downloaded for each iteration).

With personalized icons, each different one used in any particular thread would have to be retrieved from the database and downloaded ... even at a couple of kb/each it will put more of a load on both the database and the bandwidth (server-side as well as dialup users -- accounts usually have to pay for the total bytes moved through the site. If every time a thread was displayed for someone an extra 30kb (ten user icons) has to be downloaded, it could eventually add a significant amount to each month's total.
