Hahn! HAAAAAHHHHHNNNNN!!!!! |
Hey, thanks for that. I'll exit the discussion now. Good job! I didn't know this was a mollycoddle only thread.

Richard - How many of the animals you take such awesome pictures of actually buy your prints?
From my experience and from other photogs I know, it is often the images I don't like as a photographer that the client does when it comes to portrait and people photos.
You are a great photog and your business is built on the highest of quality outdoor landscape and wildlife photography, so for your business, technical excellence is an absolute must so that you can sell to the buying public. For a mom buying pictures of her little one with the expression that she loves the best - even with the eyes closed or snot running down the cheek, that is the one she wants and you ain't going to stop her from buying it! |

For those who feel the need to bash me... I was not there to catch images of him jumping into the pool. I was there to take a few shots of her son under the water. But I choose to go further and captured many more images then that.
For those who would like to see some you can go here and take a peek.
For those that want to continue to bash me... ya know what... you can bite me... Im tired of being bashed and trashed when I ask for help... it doesnt cost you a thing to ignore my post... it doesnt harm you in anyway to ignore me. Im sick of being treated like crap by people on their high horse....
ETA: In my anger I forgot to thank those who are being nice and trying to help I appreciate it.

And, the advice I gave was constructive comment, with specific advice for better results on the re-shoot. What are the rest of you doing? |

The REQUEST was for Assistance on THIS image, as the client really wants it. What request for arrogant "Do it right in the first place" and "debacle" comments did you read, and how do they help with This Image which the Client Wants? |

Yeah, trash that image. Do better next time. Sorry, it's a tough world out there. The sooner a photographer learns that, the better. |

Well, I think it was a good learning experience. Carrie now is (painfully) aware that there are some things you can adjust and compensate for in PP, but motion blur is not one of them. The rest of us got to stretch our skills a bit. It was productive. |

So I think elSapo and odriew have produced some edits that the Mother will love, and might even wonder what you thought was wrong about the image.
For my money, you did several things Right:
-the best camera to use is the one you have at the moment
-you saw an opportunistic shot and grabbed it with the camera in hand (rather than pass on it because of the camera)
-you want the client to be happy
-you want to be happy yourself with the delivered image
-you were willing to ask for help/guidance
-you recognize that the Client for This image is not seeking technical perfection, fine art, but a treasured memory (and many a treasured memory snapshot, more cherished than any other, is an opportunistic, "imperfect" shot)
Many technically perfect images have no emotion, no soul, no memorable content. This image has all of those, most especially in the mother's eyes.

What? To come out with lame points like 'Subject in focus is fundamental,' ?
E.T.A- Sorry, i think i may be a bit too argumentative here- but i do think that saying that the fundamental thing in an image such as this should be the subject in focus is nonsensical.

No Hahn got to be the fish in the barrel everyone was gunning for, for having an opinion different then everyone else. Usually it's me being brutally honest with people here which goes over like comedy here. Que the lead balloon. |

The point I am trying to make. And the reason I am so upset is that this isn't meant to be "photography". This was a moment I saw and tried to capture. A snapshot. Something non professional. She got excited and asked to see it on the spot. I said I didn't catch it right. She sighed and said oh well. We tried to make him jump in again. He wouldn't. This was not a planned image or a planned shot. It was a precious child being cute and I just happened to have a camera in my hand. I was half in the pool half out of the pool. I acted quickly JUST because it was so darn cute. The client knew the shot did not turn out right but simply asked if I would make the best of it for her scrapbook. My extra editting skills suck so - thought of u guys.

Sometimes if you blur the background the subject will seem more sharp. Here's what I came up with:

Here's my (slightly bizarre) take on it.
Caree, we understand what the situation was. Don't worry about negative feedback, it's just par for the course. For what it's worth, Hahn has a point: "Be Prepared At All Times!" But none of that invalidates this charming little image you stumbled upon, and your desire to take the best possible advantage of it.

Well, it is 'photography' and i don't think you should feel bad about that. It might not be one of your best shots but i really like it. The hands on the right of the shot held out to catch the boy are great and i love the toy shark just behind him.
Look, DPC is full of many different types of photographers and everyone has an idea of what 'photography' is or should do. Much of DPC is held in thrall to very beautiful 'technical' images and thats fine. I love all those shiny landscapes myself. But being just on DPC can give you a very narrow minded, warped view of what photography is. Getting the great advice is wonderful, and i'm very thankful for MattO's advice to me with some recent stuff for example, but for general photography stuff it can be quite narrow. I got annoyed with Richards advice to you because it just seemed so wrong and small minded photography wise (sorry Richard-no disrespect).
It's been said many times before, but if some of the most respected, major world gallery showing photographers were to to submit images to DPC they would be chasing the Brown. |

And for what it's worth, out of all the re-edited versions posted here i still prefer the original. Maybe just slightly increase the contrast. I know thats not what you or your customer was asking though |
