Hey Guys,

I have had no luck in the last few challenges I have entered. I origonally thought that they would do good, not planning to ribbon or anything but at least above my lifetime avg. Any help on these 2 would be greatly appreciated

Hi Richard,

I think both of your shots suffered from a lack of sharp focus.

For the Long Exposure, I think you were also hurt by the lack of a well-defined focal point, the lack of any foreground elements, and a busy background. The water in the foreground adds no interest to the photo. There is no primary focal point; the areas of greatest contrast are the lines where the water from the tier meets the water at the base-level pool, but those are merely bright lines that provide no visual anchor. What might have been the focal point(s)--the fountains at the top level--wind up being minor elements in the composition. The people on the left seem like they're included only by coincidence, and all the lights in the background do nothing to help direct the viewer's eye to any particular part of your photo.

I think this was taken from a very average point of view... or perhaps, in other words, not intimate enough. It feels like you were walking by and popped a shot. The colors are also a muddy magenta, where that combined with a dof that leaves no isolation of the bug to make it stand out.

If you try this again, I would suggest a far shallower dof, closer in at an eye-to-eye vantage point or even looking upward to the subject. Bring people a view that's uncommon. F2.8 or 3.5, somewhere near the sweet-spot, would have made this jump.

Thanks everyone who has responded to the thread and left me some type of insight. It was really helpful.

Can you upload a downloadable jpeg or similar, I would like to have a go at it??

It is a good photo, but the bug doesn't stand out enough from the Allium.
