Basically, im annoyed with my 'self', i find myself just taking photos for challenges now, harldy any just for myself or my portfolio.

Does anyone else feel like they're doing this?

Just thought i might throw this out there. :-)

I used to, haven't really for a while .... started again for the DPL and enjoyed doing it but now taking a break and only submitting if I have taken pics that fit the challenge ... or if I am doing a shoot anyway I may keep the challenges in mind.

Heh. I do that too.
But I think I do it because I lack imagination to think of things to shoot myself.

Taking pictures for the challenges is also 'serving' as part of a portfolio Im sure...well in my case it is. Further to this it also serves as soundboard for work which should you have taken it just because you wanted to, you would get less feedback. It's nice to know that it will also be evaluated, despite our grudges we have with soem votes, but we need this as well. Personally, since photography is not entirely my job, it's basically added spice to my ventures in searching for things to photographing. Im now exploring not only the usual things I take photographs of, but also challenging myself to think creatively in fields that I have no experience in. Im hooked and love it. Just dont always have the time to do it...but it's there and it is a backdoor to escape the rat race and pressures of work life.

If I'm wandering around town with a challenge theme or two in mind, I think I overlook opportunities for good photos that aren't challenge related.

I find that DPC has broadened my portfolio because it has opened my eyes to a variety of things that I never would of "shot" before. I do tend to shoot for challenges.... more often then for my portfolio... but at least I'm shooting where as before DPC I would go days or weeks without touching my camera gear.

I hear you, Josh, and for awhile shooting for challenges was pretty much all I did. Then I met Ryan and we go off and shoot together, sometimes get in the car and just head one direction til something catches our fancy. And because he likes to do more studio stuff and LED, painting with light etc I've been introduced to that. We may or may not deliberately shoot for a challenge, but my current entry for POC is from an afternoon session with Ryan.

However I am now shooting deliberately more for stock as opposed to challenges, so things have kinda reversed upon themselves! But definitely if you have a shooting partner, it makes life and photography a little more interesting.

I am able to take it or leave it now. So many other things going on that this is just an occasional time filler for me. In the beginning I enjoyed it more than I do now but my situation is a little unusual.

Nah... I think I shot specifically for challenges one or twice but for me it's mostly - Oh I took this cool image and it fits in the challenge (as you can see from my scores, others didn't exactly agree with either of those assessments... especially the "cool" part :-) ). I am hardly someone that entered a lot of challenges anyway......

I find the various photg forums interesting but DPC is slipping for me from the core set of forum's I visit daily..... I am finding photog blogs and even (shock) books more interesting for the last couple of years in addition to shooting - when I can spare the time from my sucky day job anyway. Need something to keep from falling over the insane line (too far) and photg is that for a lot of us....

Just shoot for youself....
