Actually moving up a bit. This is where the photo should score.... 5.6 area.
I checked out my image on a few uncalibrated screens and it looks a little drab.

went from 7 to 4. now i'm sitting at a 5 on a shot i love. ugh. |
i'm normally pretty positive but i'm sick of this crap. i have a 4.7 right now and i'm completely sick of being worried about it.
it is what it is, i guess. the shot's good but it's not appealing to dpc voters for whatever reason. screw it. |
*hugs to you* your stuffs not crap!! |

From the next challenge, I know what to do. I will narrow down my candidates to two entries. Then I will pick a final one upon discussions with myself that lasts hours of planning and speculation, and THEN, enter the OTHER one that I rejected 8 hours ago.
I bet that's gonna fly... and that way, I won't need to 'align' what I like with what the masses like too! :-);-) |

I thought I would hi-jack this thread just because Im jealous I did not enter...:) I went to midnight after having through all the trouble to take some shots, but no strength to process and wife also called me to bed...01h00 the morning. im not a youngster anymore sad to say...:(
Looked at the pics and some nice work and jealous of you all...
So here is my score..not to be entirely out of sync with the thread

Sarah, I think we all go through the same thing here. It's very hard not to take the scores personally, but that's what you have to do. And that's why it feels so bad.
If I am being truly objective, in most cases, when I compare my shots to those that do better than mine, I definitely see how they might be better technically or compositionally, or creatively, or whatever. There will always be those I just don't get and still do well. There are those I think are brilliant and come in at the bottom of the pack. I have been stuck in the mid fives for ever and have only just started squeaking up to the upper fives. Of course, my current Boat entry is my new PW (below 4!!!!!!!), and my point of color (which I LOVE and think is different from the usual flower/bug shot) isn't doing so peachy either.
In the end, you have to create an image which pleases you. Unless you're doing it for a paying client :-) |

No, no, no... That is NOT how we do it around here...
Instead, it's much more in fashion, to start a goodbye thread, lurk in it for days, then re-arrive vibrantly arguing, express your change of heart, and eloquently state how none of us know-nothing-idiot-voters will ever make YOU leave DPC..
Bah, I would have thought that you would know this by now Prash.... :)
Oh, I've got a 5.3 something or other... Pretty ok for the 2sec photoshoot I did with the P&S.. |

LOL....yeah, and then you'll get called the "unmentionable name" that starts with an "R" ;0)
Someone in here mentioned that they were SO fed up with their scores that they were going to run around with their camera under their arm, shutter open and just enter whatever it snaps as that would likely do better than the effort they were putting into the challenges. I had to laugh and I am tempted to do the same thing! LOL ;)
I actually did go out this weekend and bought another monitor because I was editing on a laptop and I couldn't see what others were picking up in my shots. Now, I see what they were talking about. So, I entered the Point of Color Challenge this week and I'm sitting at a 5.612 right now which is better than I was getting! So, there's improvement BUT....I also think that the definitions of what is considered "point of color" is going to be different to each voter as the problem with this challenge. To me, point of colour meant more of a B&W appearance to the overall shot or a definitely much muted colored background and a stand-out colour object/subject. However, in looking at a lot of the entries, that isn't necessarily the case. I'm having trouble with this one in voting so, I'm holding off voting in this challenge for today. :)
As for the P&S...yeah, I'm starting to work more with one I bought last year because it's SO portable that I can shove it in my purse/bag and have it with me for shots instead of having to carry around a camera bag everywhere. I think some great shots can come from some of the newer P&S. I have a CANON G10 which has the manual settings as well and am just getting used to them. :)
And, Prash...you've really come along with your photography since you started! I looked at your portfolio and can see the difference greatly! Keep it up!!! Don't lose heart! Remember, what does well here, doesn't necessarily do well elsewhere and therefore, vice-versa too! :)

Feel free to hold off for a long time... :D It never occurred to me that the rest of the shot should be a desaturated look. So I definitely have other colors in mine. It's too bad, because I had an option to go colorless in other areas. Ah well.

On a related note.... I'm seeing a few GREAT 7+ shots that are basically FREE STUDY in nature BUT with a color thrown in. A NON-REAL example:
A flawless photo of a goat standing on a grey blanket. The blanket has a red heart glued to it. Obviously the goat is the main subject but the heart is just thrown in to conform to the challenge.
Now...compare that to a photo of a baby goat sucking milk out of a red bottle...
....would you say one conforms to the spirit of the challenge better than the other? All things being equal...does one merit a higher score?

I udderly belive that the one with the red bottle merits a higher score. |

The description does say that the point of color should be the main subject.
