Coming off a new PB so anything lower is deflating. Especially with this shot, which I REALLY like. Sitting at a flat 5. Where it goes from here, time will tell... |

From 7 to 6 to 5.6 overnight. I've never had an image go up 1.5 points overnight.....only down. Why is that? |

Sometimes DPC voting crowd seems like a group of primary school kids. To most, Only red, green, or bright blue are counted as colors. And if you want to confirm the teachers if that is the case, the kids would intervene and say - it's your choice, you can say brown is a color too, yeah!!! Go ahead!:):):)
back to scores:
I am at 4.6. Went down a point over night! |

i'm normally pretty positive but i'm sick of this crap. i have a 4.7 right now and i'm completely sick of being worried about it.
it is what it is, i guess. the shot's good but it's not appealing to dpc voters for whatever reason. screw it. |

Dont get too upset, you only have 26 entries so far. You will get the hang of it. Most of us it takes 100+ entries before we start getting the hang of it. You will learn soon. Just keep doing what you enjoy. :)

the first contest i entered was in 2006--it just seems as if the voting has changed a LOT since then. also, i'm irked with myself because dpc is apparently where i put all of my worst shots, something i can tell during and after each challenge. it's like i rush to shoehorn in something i think will work or i just don't do my best but throw it in there to be a part of the challenges and then get pissed that it doesn't do well.
the image i have in this challenge is a good one but maybe i'm just not good at telling what will do well.
i'm very frustrated because i can't seem to "get" what is considered good here on dpc and, as a result, i'm entering junk--except this shot, which is vastly under appreciated! :)

I had a quick look at your last few entries. Out of the ones I voted on, most got a 6 or 7 from me, with only a single 4 and a single 5. You are not hitting the broad appeal factor somehow, but your stuff does NOT suck by any means. Always remember the overall score is is about broad appeal as much as about making a good photo. There are other factors to consider besides average vote. I submit my evidence:

Sarah, I hear your exasperation and can feel what you're feeling. I've put in over a hundred entries and I still don't seem to know what it takes either. What worked a couple of years ago, doesn't fully work now. There's tons of new voters/members since I began too. I think one simply has to know that more often than not, what gets "mass appeal" is the very well done, "pretty" shots. It has to be a really "moving" piece if it's not a great "eyecandy" shot. Beautifully photographed landscapes, sunrises, sunsets, loads of studio shots, night scenes, model like subjects, lots of colour or a perfectly contrasted and dynamic B&W shot but, they also have to be very well edited as these are what makes the front pages more often than not. There are exceptions to that but, when that happens, it's because it's been an emotive shot (in a good way) that has grabbed voter's attention. Keep thinking, "dynamic pretty" and "well done". Those are the main (not always) criteria that get photos higher scores. It's not easy to accomplish though.
(Edited to actually add A comment LOL...too quick on the post button...DUhhhh! LOL)

that's hugely helpful (and i'm grateful that you said my stuff doesn't suck)! you're also very, very right about which score breakdown would be preferable. i'd rather there were people out there who had big feelings one way or the other about my stuff, rather than just seeing it and not caring much either way.
i'm still sub-5 on this shot that i like but i'll deal. thanks for your input! |
