i was reading an article in eDigital Photo about selling prints on ebay. It seemed like an interesting idea, but has anyone here ever sold or tried to sell prints on ebay. i looked on ebay, and didnt find many prints that people were bidding on.

I checked on it and noticed the same thing. People weren't bidding on the few that were there.

I haven't done any eBay sales in awhile but I have sold some there. They were simple 8x10 or 11x14 prints with a date and signature.

I didn't sell them for very much either since they weren't matted or framed or anything else.

I sold about 40 or so total ranging from $10-$25 through the duration of my sales. I believe I started at $10 for an 8x10 then it went up to $15 and $20 for an 11x14 which then went up to $25.

Some runs I didn't sell anything, others I sold a few.

I found I did better if I had a fixed price, multiple-item available sale (ie 100 available at $14.99) and gave the buyer a choice from a few images (show small versions of the prints available for that size in the ad). Most often that led people to see a few that 'went together' and want to buy them all. You did have to be careful to keep good track of what people wanted and make sure it was clear they had to actually purchase 3 if they wanted all 3.. not that you got 3 for $xx.xx.

All in all it was good if I had the prints already made up and ready to go and I didn't mind dealing with eBay's foibles.

The saleability is always going to be up in the air. I noticed I did much better with my black & whites than I did color. Finally, I had a very nice template that I used from ebsqart.com (a perk of membership) which also helped showcase the stuff and probably made it look a bit more professional.

you could see the authors ebay name in the really small picture in the article, so i looked at his user page. it looked like he hadn't sold anything in a long time, as i recall, a year or two. i guess he couldn't think of any other good, recent topics for an article so he wrote about that. i suppose it can't hurt to try, but i wouldnt expect to make $2,000 in a month. for the few photographers i found selling prints on ebay, very few had any bidding competition going on. it would be a nice way to make some extra money in the fact that you don't have to have prints already made, to cut down on costs.

I havent sold anything yet on ebay, I have been watching and viewing bids for awhile, I think people are starting to bid less and less, sellers are losing money, people are wanting good things for cheap cheap prices, I do think however personal prints is good advertising for your work, everynow and then... And as long as you can do the fix price and still make the sales go for it.
