I know we can rotate in basic, can we flip the image?
(told you it was a stupid question :)

Since this affects the entire image equally, I would guess that it must be allowed..
As always... SC clarification would be good. |

...or is it considered the same as skewing?
"You may not
distort or stretch your image in any way."
I'm curious too. |

I don't think you can flip (assuming you mean produce a mirror-image).
Especially in the case of things like text, flipping would result in a distorted image.
But who knows?
The rules really ought to be annotated. |

It wouldn't really change the relationships within the image, and would essentially preserve how the viewer would describe the photo.. So, I'm still guessing it would be allowed.. |

| Yes, you can flip in Basic. And if you get DQ'd for it, tell them "but, but, but Art said it was ok" |

and you could also blame Bear_Music who answered the same way less than a month ago //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=999779&highlight=flip |

But that was only about cropping rotating and resizing -- flipping is more drastic.

Yes, you can flip. This one was flipped, and it was validated.

Yeah, but... that was in 2006. The current Basic Editing rules are from November 2009. They also explicitly say you can crop, rotate, and resize, but there is no mention of flipping. |

I feel a little better since you get to flipping by selecting rotate in photoshop. Although that probably doesn't mean anything.

| Flipping is the same as rotating, just about a different axis!! |

Yes, flipping an image via either the vertical or horizontal axis is perfectly OK in Basic (as long as it's the entire image, of course).

No... e.g.,:
Rotate "|\|" and you get "|\|".
Flip (mirror) "|\|" and you get "|/|". |

Any chance we could amend the rules to say so explicitly? |

Skewing pulls some pixels more than others, flipping effects all the pixels all the same way. If rotating is legal (and it is) then flipping in any direction has to be.

It's sort of implied by the "You May ... crop, rotate and resize your entry." section, but I can see that it's not the most obvious thing. I'll see what we can do...

Thanks! I figured it had to be legal, but it wasn't extremely obvious. :)
