I am looking for suggestions for lenses for my new D700 (yeah!!) that are less expensive than the suggested Nikon lineup.

I already have the following lenses that are most compatible with Nikon's full frame cameras:

Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR DG IF-ED
Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR
Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D

The super wide angle lens to replace my Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro DX is what I need the most. I will probably sell the Tokina to help pay for the full frame replacement super wide angle.

Next, I would be interested in a lens that fills the gap between the super wide angle lens and the 70-200. The super wide angle lens is the priority, however.

I would appreciate any suggestions and alternatives to the very pricey Nikon 12-24 and 24-70.

Thanks.

if you wanna buy inexpensive lenses, i think that the 18-35 3.5/4.5 and the 35-70 2.8 are two good choices...

the 18-35 does the same thing as the 17-35mm f/2.8 AF-S, with more distortion, but with slightly better sharpness, for a lot less money.

same thing about the 35-70 (my brother has just buy this lens), good lens with very good results also on the digital FX format...

The Tamron 28-75 is my go to lens. Image quality is excellent. In theory it's not quite as good as the Nikon 24-70, but in the real world I live in, I can't see the difference. Focusing is a bit slower, and it is definitely not as sturdy as the Nikon, but you can buy 4 of them for what a 24-70 costs.

Since you said the super-wide is your priority, I'd take a look at the Sigma 12-24. I love it. And andrewt has done quite well with it. Not the fastest, but with the super-wide you don't necessarily require a wide-open lens.

I don't know where it is now, but I seem to remember reading that the front glass protrudes and therefore filters can't be used on the Sigma 12-24. Is this true? I do a lot of seascapes and landscapes in which circular polarizers are almost a must, as well as neutral density and graduated neutral density filters. Are these able to be used on this Sigma lens?

edit to add: Found it here
