took this today ...with the drebel (:D first real day out).....
It was in the middle of one of the local shopping centres - asked the children to bounce the ball so I could practise with the camera.....they thought it was hilarious!
What settings would have worked better? Av mode, F5.6, 1/1600, no flash, hand held.

I think the biggest issue here is - the sun is front of the children, so they're poorly lit from the back. Had you been in front of them natural light would have helped to illuminate them and make exposure easier. |

Hi Sue
Looking at your photo I would say try to lighten it up, some things that you might try:
You probably don't need quite so high a shutter speed to stop that amount of motion, you could probably get by with as low as 1/250.
Even though its outdoors you can sometimes use the flash as a fill to even out your lighting, sometimes it can make a big difference.
With the 300D, and 10D the noise is incredibly low. Don't be afraid to use your ISO settings to help you get the photos you want. I regularly use my up to ISO 400, and have used ISO 1600 on several occasions with acceptable (for my purpose at those times) results.
If you're shooting RAW you can adjust the exposure compensation of the photo and in the case of this shot I think you could brighten it significantly.
Other than that I'd say your picture looks like a fun, candid snapshot. Great to get out there and play! You also might try shooting in [P] mode and just tweaking things as needed, kinda watch how the camera behaves in certain situations and learn from it a bit.
Hope some of this helps, if you have any specific questions you can always PM or email me.

thanks Paul....what size do you take the images on? Mine's set on large, have got a 128 MB memory card in and I chewed through that in no time.
thankyou Dave - it was great to get a fine day and be able to just go out and take photos......most got discarded but that's ok :D

I bet it did. :-( I use the highest quality options, but I have 3 * 256MB cards (plus an X-Drive).
An X-Drive is quite a lot to outlay all in one go, but considering you can walk around with 20GB of storage and don't have to worry about backups, I think most people would say it's a worthy investment. That way you won't need to buy more than one other card, because you can shoot with one card whilst the other is copying to X-Drive.
If you don't plan on shooting lots and lots of shots (500+) in a day, I'd recommend some cheapish (but good branded) 8x or 12x (speed) 256 MB cards. At best quality I can fit about 100 pics on a 256MB card.

Photoshop CS (don't know about other versions)
Just select Shadows Highlight and play a bit with it...
I was playing around with Photoshop for a while but could never capture how "they do that"
Then I noticed a book, The Photoshop CS book for digital Photographers by Scott Kelby.
This is a book that give's you those tricks you want, and all told step by step...
Learned a lot from that.

Just Large, Smooth, Jpeg. My newly formatted card now says 78 shots, put I will generally get slightly more depending on background. |
