If you move an original from one file to another (cut/paste) does it make it not valid??

What about if you rename it??

Caree, the idea is to keep the original EXIF data intact.

You must beware even when uploading photos from your camera to your computer. Some programs alter the EXIF and therefore invalidate your photo for DPC purposes.

Once your original photo is uploaded and saved to your computer, you can make a copy of it, and that copy is what you edit and rename if you choose. After all editing is complete (including resizing) it's the copy that you submit to DPC. But always keep the original file untouched in case you need to verify the shooting data.

That's a very brief overview; hope that makes sense!

Never, ever rename it. It will alter the EXIF and say it has been modified.

Edit to add.....start shooting in RAW...better results and less chance of accidentally modifying the EXIF.

copy and paste is alright other than that do not do anything to it. Make a folder called originals and before you do anything to your entry first make a copy there. Then play with it in another folder.

Caree,

Just remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question.....only stupid people who ask questions.

... to which they've gotten stupid answers. ;-)

The recommended method of retaining an original for the purposes of DPC validation is to use the computer's operating system (Windows, MAc OS, Linux, etc.) to simply drag and drop the file from the camera card (or mounted camera) to the hard drive, and to then always work only on a copy of that file.

One precaution I don't remember seeing mentioned here is that, once you have the original on the hard drive, you can make it read-only in the Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac) dialogs -- that should at least prevent accidental overwrites or name changes.

My own workflow is to retain the images on the camera card until I have both copied them to the hard drive and backed them up to optical media (CD-R/DVD) so that I always have two copies of the original file on different media.

Thanks! Thats the answer I was looking for. I wanted to make a folder to put the originals I use in challenges so that they are safe and was afraid to move them from where I originally put them! Now I know I can! Thanks!! Now I dont have to rename them either!! muchas gracias!

My first and only DQ was because I did a Save As and it modified the exif. I was at a 6.7 200 votes into the voting process. NEVER do a Save As!

What Judi said was spot on: use RAW, then you don't have to double everything on your hard drive, because the RAW remains unaltered. Also, it gives you a lot more flexibility.

Oh crap. :( I opened the orginal... made the changes... hit save as and saved it as another file... didnt think anything about it cause I wasnt saving over the original... so the exif is ruined?

Not necessarily. Most of the time that will be ok. You can send the original file to SC and ask them to verify that is is kosher, in the Contact Us link under "Help".

Other people haven't had a problem with Save As -- I think mine was changed because I was working in photoshop elements and it was saving files as editions of the original, but even though I did a Save As, it changed the original -- probably to link it to the others, I guess...
