I am working on my first advanced editting contest and I have read the rules a few times but they arent sinking in.
Am I allowed to soften part of a background or do all filters have to be applied to the whole image?
What would one do with 10 copies of the same image?? "You must:
create your entry from 1-10 captures of a single scene "
"saturate, desaturate or change the colors of your entry or any existing object within it" im assuming this means make it B& W, Sepia, etc... and either the whole image or part of the image is that correct?
Sorry to ask so many questions... I just want a good understanding of what I am up against so I can give myself the best shot possible.
Thanks in advance.

The 1-10 image thing is if you're going to do the "hdr" thing. You shouldn't concern yourself with this in your first advanced challenge.
In advanced you can pretty much do anything except add or remove something....but you are allowed to remove "sensor dust" and if I'm current...maybe even powerlines.
As far as the filters....you can apply them to all or just a part of the image. Masking is usually used to selectivly use filters.
You can also use tools to touch up parts of the picture. For example, if you want to blur a lamp in the background...you can....AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT REMOVE THE LAMP FROM THE PICUTRE ! I would say you can blur it as long as you can tell it is still a lamp.
You can even spot saturate or desaturate single parts of the image.

Another way to use multiple images of the same scene is to perform focus stacking, wherein you get a much larger depth of field than is normally possible (particularly useful for macro).
Also, keep in mind that although you can selectively blur things, if what you're blurring is deemed a major element, you will face a disqualification. You can't remove or insert anything through the use of any filter. So say you have a big annoying person standing right behind your subject and you think, hey, I'll just gaussian blur the hell out of them and voila, no problem... That would be a DQ. Also if you just dodged/burned them into oblivion, it would be the same. The key is figuring what is and is not a major element... and if you want to chance whether it is. If it's questionable, send it in early and you can find out what SC thinks. Minor elements, however, you can clone out and get rid of no problem. This does include powerlines (assuming they aren't super prominent) and any number of other objects that may just be inconvenient for your shot.

Sure; I'll tell you my thoughts on it. Upload a before and after whatever step you're wondering about and pm me the numbers.
ETA: Forgot to mention you should upload your shots to your workshop, so nobody can peruse them without knowing the actual image ID number.
