Today I was shooting some fruits in my garden, and I noticed that the reds tended to be oversaturated. With the F707 this was a known problem, but I thought that Sony had fixed this in the F717. Anybody else have this problem? Any suggestions for fixing it, lighting maybe? Sorry that I'm not posting any images, but I'd like to use them for one of the ongoing challenges.

Also my old 4MPixles DSC85 does the same, the preproduction 717 had this problem, but final model didn't, as stated in dpreview... may be some units still had it, don't know.

Here is a "crop" of dpreview about 717:

"Colours are definitely less saturated and more accurate than we saw on the DSC-F707 and for this Sony should get an extra Kudos. Colours are now accurate and still well saturated providing images which look good straight out of the camera with very little post-processing required. The F717's has a very good lens, this was clear when we reviewed the F707 and we're glad to see Sony has stuck with this great lens.

Unlike most digital cameras we review I had no specific image quality issues with the DSC-F717. Certainly we observed overly saturated reds on our pre-production DSC-F717 but I'm glad to report that these appear to have been addressed in the final production camera."

The problem, IMO and -experience, is wide spread and extends to various cameras and makes. I'm beginning to observe this, although only occasionally and less so, with certain hues of red with my DSLR even.

The F717, specifically, seems to struggle when challenged to render strong reds which contain a blue hue. Purple, violet, lilac... this kind of thing.

I admit to having converted a number of shots to b & w, as a convenience, just to stem this issue (F717).

Yes, that's exactly the type of color I was trying to capture, and it came out oversaturated. Any workaround, like maybe underexposing, or manipulating the white balance (although I wouldn't know how to get a better setting)? It seems a shame that I can't shoot fruit because my camera doesn't like purple :-))

I don't think underexposing would get you there. Actually, I found it helps to expose well (naturally and without excess). I do think running a gamut of varying exposures under varied lighting would be a reasonable experiment, which cannot do any harm.
You could experiment with WB, although, again, the selected colour temperature would effect the whole image, not just an isolated colour area.

Conservatively decreasing contrast might help depending on the shot, since USM will eventually return a little contrast when you sharpen the photo.

took this with the 717 ....it's pretty much how it looks on the bush.
F4.0,ISO 100, 1/500.

had a real problem with the dark pink camelia though with the pics ending up oversaturated.
