after downloading images onto the computer am I sposed to do anything before disconnecting the camera ......with the Sony had to click on a box so that the computer would recognise what software was being disconnected....before unplugging it. I can't find anything in the manuals and there's no disconnect message as there was with the other package.
told you it was a dumb question

Not to my knowledge - I just turn the camera off, or more normally yank the cable out. :-) |

You haven't said what program you are using to download from the camera. Assuming you are using Canon Zoombrowser, you can disconnect the camera as soon as the download is complete - when Zoombrowser goes back to the browser window from the download window.
Don't worry about asking questions, whether or not you think they are dumb!!!
Good Luck

I bought a card reader soon after I got my Rebel and highly recommend getting one. I found connecting the camera to the computer a little fussy and the software a bit cumbersome. With the card reader I can charge the battery while I download, and I can download to my work computer without worrying about having software installed. The card reader works with zoombrowser and other programs as well as drag and drop in Windows Explorer. With the reader you do perform a safe disconnect. |

A USB2.0 card reader (and USB2.0 controller) with a fast CF card will cut your download times to a third of the USB1.1 port on the camera. It also helps to have a fast (ATA133 7200RPM) hard drive for dumping to.
Also, when working with CF readers, it's best to "Eject" them with the removable hardware manager. There's also a write cache problem with Windows 2000 (not XP) that will give you a "Delayed Write Failed" error if you remove a volume within 20 seconds of reading/writing. Wait to remove the card if you choose not to "Eject" it safely.
