I've just downloaded the trial of CS5 and have been playing with HDR Toning.

First impressions are that it does a better job than Photomatix Tonemapping.

What experiences are others having?

What settings in Photomatix would produce the same effect?

PS seems to be less heavy handed when doing small adjustments than Photomatix with the same size adjustment.

I have found that for landscape shots Photomatix does a better job (Grunge as a starting point), where as for portraits or photos with people, PS does a much better job (Surrealistic as a starting point). Obviously these are JUST starting points, but it does take care of a lot of the initial "heavy lifting".

Just my .02 though.

I have both and switch regularly between them.......

I'll have to play more. One of the shots I was working with was a landscape and to me looked better with the PS processing which is why I've asked the question.

I realize this is all personal taste and that it will take practice to get the best results out of both pieces of software.

I should have included the disclaimer "Generally" before my statement.

Typically I will process the same bracket using both pieces of software and then compare the differences.......

Anyone else playing with HDR in CS5 have any tips or comparisons to Photomatix?

If you're a member of NAPP there's some excellent tutorials, one is on HDR Pro

Thanks for reminding me. I'll have to take a look at the Kelby Training site as well.

I played around with the Photoshop CS5 HDR and PhotoMatix HDR I have to say that I enjoy Photoshop much better because of more adjustments and settings. Below is a link of the HDR images I did. One was in PS CS5 and the other was in PhotoMatix.

If you have a TiVo, you can subscribe to Photoshop User TV episodes and get a lot of the CS5 tuts on there.
