I bought PS CS4, and am more confused than ever. I have two choices, I can take a PS class at my Jr. College (online, only class available), or I can purchase a book and teach myself. There are more books than I'd like to browse through on the subject, so I come to you for advice.
Which PS book do you recommend for someone with little experience with the software? And are there other ways of learning besides the two I've mentioned.

Thank you!
Sondra

Though I've always hated the title, the "...for Dummies" (in general) books are pretty good at introductory / familiarization and even some advanced concepts.

Ken, some of us need that reference ("...for Dummies") so we know that they are talking to us...

I like the photoshop books from Scott Kelby. I have both books for CS2 and CS3. I find them helpful. He has other books too. Can't think of which one I have but I like it also. Just a suggestion.

Not all teaching styles suit everyone. If there's a bookstore nearby, I'd suggest browsing several by different authors. You will find that you like the style of some but not others.

I second the dummies books. I don't know much about the CS4 one, but I can speak in general regarding the dummies series. I taught computer classes for 10 years. Many times I was asked to teach classes on software about which I knew nothing. I expected the dummies books to be overly simplistic and not go far enough into the software. But they actually go pretty deep. Obviously they're not for the advanced user, but they usually do take you well past the basics.

I have a few books for CS4 The one I found to be most useful is Adobe Photoshop CS4 Classroom in a Book.

All I have for processing is CS-3, however, the book I use as my principle reference resource is: Adobe Photoshop CS-3 Book for Digital Photographers. I think it's escellent. I "Googled" the same title, except for PS-4 and Amazon has it with excellent reviews. Another book I really like is Photoshop Pro Photography Handbook. Mine is also for CS-3 but my guess is that it has been updated for CS-4. I'll let you look it up to see if it exists. I think both are much better than the dummies book. They can probably review them at a major book store such as Barnes and Noble. There also might be better books out.

The above referenced "Photoshop CS4 for Photographers" by Martin Evening is a god resource. And of course anything by Kelby.

A God Resource? I figured that this book would be a God Resource, Then I read it and it was only about using computer software. BTW, I still have both weekends open while I am back in Wisconsin, plus all the week days so get ready for a big breakfast. Although I believe you were born ready for that. lol

Thank you all for your advice. I will look over the books later this week.

PS: A god resource sounds good to me. :)

Absolutely excellent books. Have kept these by the desk for each version since CS2, and use them a lot.
