For the record, that's perhaps Phillipe Halsman's most famous image. The *subject* is Salvador Dali, but the work is Halsman's.

"You could do this easily in Photoshop today, but Philippe Halsman did not - this was shot live. It took 28 tries to get it over six hours. Halsman's wife, Yvonne, held the chair, on the count of three, his assistants threw three cats and a bucket of water into the air; and on the count of four, Dali jumped and Halsman snapped the picture. It was that simple."

The image was part of an extended series that Halsman did in collaboration with Dali.

That simple. Right ....

28 tries over six hours means they had less than 15 minutes to refill the bucket, retrieve the cats and Señor Dali, and take the next shot.

I wonder though, unless they were developing each shot before starting the next, which of the 28 shots ended up as the printed version?

I wonder how many cats they went through! :)

I wonder how many pairs of leather gloves the assistants throwing the cats went through! ;-)

Something tells me that, if this challenge suggestion is taken up, this is the photo I will not try and emulate ...

Wimp. I was going to suggest a "Cat Throwing" challenge.

Thank you Robert.:) I was under the impression that it was Dali's concept, but nonetheless is a remarkable photo. Talk about creative persistance.:)

I'm going to try this with very small humans instead of cats. I'll use maple syrup instead of water.
