The 300d uses 6 differrent approaches to metering. They apply automatically depending on the shooting mode, and wether you are using flash or ambient light, if you are using exposure lock or manual.
1. Eval-F/ full frame 35 segment evaluative, selected focus points emphasis. Used in auto focus ambient light, any mode but manual.
2. Eval-C/ as above but centerweighted. Manual focus, all modes except manual exposure, ambient light.
3. E-TTL/ full frame 35 segment evaluative through the lens flash metering. Used on Autofocus, flash indicated, any exposure mode.
4. Average/ 35 segment uniform average. Used in manual focus, flash, and any shooting mode
5. CWA/ 35 segment center weighted average. Used in either focus mode, Ambient light, Manual shooting mode.
6. Partial/ (central cross only measured) used in all creative modes using lock 4 or exposure lock if no flash is enabled.
There it is tricky to understand ( I find it so at any rate ) but this info is from Chuck Westfall, the Tech. Info. guy at Canon USA.
Short and long, you can controll your metering mode only by shifting your shooting mode, but all the metering modes are available if you can be flexible.
