I have a college project (I am doing an evening class city & guilds) which is to take a selection of formal photographs of an office manager in front of their computer for use in the companies annual report, minimum of 3 shots to be provided on CD .... that's the easy bit :)
However, there are two extras!
The company want the copyright for the image, I need to explain a) why there will be an extra charge for that and b) how I will assign the copyright. I assume almost a reverse model release where I relinquish all rights to the photograph? How would you justify the extra charge for the copyright?
The other extra is, whilst at the company on the shoot they decide they want me to photograph 2 more employees for the report, and as I am there with a digital camera and images are being supplied on cd there will be no extra charge, right?!
I have to document how I would tell the client there will be an extra charge and why. My only thoughts are the fact there will be extra time to pose, light, and take the photographs as well as the post process of selecting and processing the images for the CD. Anything else I can add to that?
Thanks (in advance) for any help :)

You could relate it to how the customer prices their own products or services. Do they give something away for free because they are "already there"? |

not sure i'm following you, bob...
is this a two part assignment, one being to take the photos and two being to figure out how to deal with the client? |

I take it there's no actual photography being done, that this is an assignment on the "business" of photography, and that this is a hypothetical situation.

We are taking photos for the assignment (using fellow students as the "corporate employee") but we also have to produce a document to hand in with the photos stating how we would hypothetically deal with the clients requests, ie wanting more pics for free and assigning the copyright over |

I can't help you with the copyright explanation but with the extras required while being on site, you could reason that if there is a contract in place and the scope of work is for your travel time to and from the site, posing and shooting one person and processing and providing three pictures on CD, then adding two more people would be an extra to the scope of work and would require a change order for the contract. If they are popping this on you at the time of the shoot, you should have a change order form handy allowing you to write up an agreement for the extra work on the spot and have them sign it prior to performing the work. It is a negotiation so the cost probably wouldn't be the original cost x 3 but would probably be a reduced portion of the original costs x 3 including your sitting fee (the cost for posing two more people), your shooting fee, your processing fee and the fee for providing six more copyright waived pictures on CD.
It would really be a test of your mettle because you would probably want to do the extra work but not for free. You also don't want to anger your client by being a hard head about the extra costs. |

One would hope that if you were "actually" doing a corporate client shoot, you would have a contract with the company PRIOR to the shoot, stating all the "boundaries"; ie: if they choose to add additional shots while on the shoot, how much extra that would cost. This should all be previously contractually bound between you and the corporate client so that they cannot back you into a corner such as this.

Yep, part of the assignment is to create a quotation, that's a good idea to try and cover any possible extras in the quotation and have an extra order form available on site.

Bah, save effort, tell your instructor that you object to all forms of capitalism, and you would strongly prefer to donate the work. :) |
