I have noticed this in the past and thought it was just me (maybe it is) but these images Declan's dpc images I uploaded of my Grandson's birthday party look soft and generally poor compared to the photos uploaded to my own website > here Declan's Birthday shots

The photos on my website have been resized to 800 whilst most of the ones here on DPC are at 1200. Would that make such a difference?

If you upload a picture longer than 800 pixels, I think the image normally displayed (e.g. when you clickon a thumbnail and go to the photo page) will be resized to 800 pixels -- you need to click the link "view full-sized image" to see it at full resolution.

Unless it is a print image I try to limit my uploads here to the 800-pixel challenge size limit -- partly for consistency and simplicity -- and I don't notice any problems.

I think what is happening is that because you are uploading at 1200 pixels, DPC is resizing to 800 pixels for the main image page. When it downsizes it, you lose a little sharpness in the downsampling. The trick is to resize and sharpen them at the size at which you know they will display. Just like for a challenge.

Ok, thanks. That will be the reason then as when I click on the larger image it does look at lot better! So keeping it to 800 max will improve these shots then?

Yes, if your images are no larger than 800 pixels you should see no difference between the image at home (viewed in the browser) and that uploaded here.
