I do mostly portraiture and I've owned the 24-105 and 24-70, the Tamron 28-75, and a Canon 85 1.8. With quick moving subjects, I found the Tamron focus speed inefficient (though this was after being spoiled by the instant response of the 24-105).

Between the two L lenses, they're both great - image quality is excellent. The 24-105 is a bit more versatile, the 24-70 is faster. You won't be disappointed either way.

As for the 85 1.8 - focus speed was ok, but it couldn't focus close enough for me, and showed some CA wide open to f/4.

I use the 24-105 mostly when I go backpacking and I'm shooting landscapes, but I often lament the lack of sharpness through out the image with it. Could just be my lens, but that is my input.

How come you use it for landscapes instead of the 24-70?

What I mean to say is: I only take one lens when I backpack (the 24-105) and it has a little larger range than the 24-70 and since I own both I don't have to risk the one I like more out in the elements.
I do think the 24-105 is an excellent lens and if I had only it, I would probably find very few faults with it.

Personally, I would want a prime lens for portraits. If I was getting a zoom I would want something that covers 70mm to 125mm

I want the primes too, but I cannot afford them for now, but at some point I want to trade my 100-400 for the 70-200 ;)

The lenses you are looking at are 2-3 times the price of a good 90-100mm lens.

If you're shooting portraits this shouldn't even be asked lol 24-70 2.8 all the way.

I see you have a 100mm 2.8, I use that a lot for portaits, but if I had a 5d Mark II it would be a lot more flexible for portraiture.
Only other I would consider if I had a mark II:
canon 70-200 F4 IS
canon 70-200 F2.8 IS

But I would try the 100mm on some shoots first.

I'll do my homework and look into the tamron lenses.

It's not normally thought of as a portrait lens, but the Tamron 10-24 that I recently bought has been great for those sort of shots. At the wider end it gives people that fun bug-eyed look, but in the 20-24mm range it gives a normal look to people and works well in a small space.

Yeah, but that's on a crop sensor camera. She's shooting FF. That's ultra-ultra-wide to quite wide on FF, not a good portrait lens at all. You're cropping out all the edge stretching at 24mm with your sensor.

Everyone I know who has the Tamron 28-75 says they'd put it up against L glass any day of the week. The wide angle lens I'm getting is going to be a Tamron.

You'll be very happy with it. I was a little unsure, because so few DPC members have it, and hundreds own the Sigma. Reviews were all very positive, however. I've been very pleased. This is my best lens right now and has not come off my camera very much since I got it.
