Hi,

My camera has a TIFF setting, when used makes an image of around 10 MB. When taking photos for stock or contest entries, is this what other people are using? Or do you take the original as a jpeg?

Another question - my 4.5 mp camera - is about 10MB the largest I can get from the camera?

Thanks.

My Olympus C-720UZ has a TIFF setting too. By avoiding compression, it eliminates the possibility for compression artifacts. Sounds good in theory; in practice, I can't tell any difference between a TIFF and a high quality JPEG. And TIFF files are so big that only a few will fit on the card. So I don't use TIFF in the camera. (I do use TIFF regularly for storing processed images on my computer, where space isn't a big issue. Resaving in JPEG format adds artifacts each time, and they can eventually add up and degrade the quality. So I only go back to JPEG when required for the final application, such as DPC.)

Thanks - I didn't know that you could save a jpeg as a TIFF but I just tried it and it works. I only got a few shots per card using TIFF, and each shot took forever to record on the card, so this way will work much better. Thanks again!

You want to record as much of the data as possible without compression (in my opinion), if you want to make print quality photos. In camera (and software based) compression decreases the size and information both. Often why you will see "the jaggies." I have been shooting almost exclusively in RAW now, except for family type snapshots, then I go to high qual. jpeg.
