As a neophyte in using editing software, (and a new owner of a Canon 20D, of which I am very fond and proud!), I plan to buy a tutorial book teaching me to use the Adobe Photoshop Elements software that came bundled with the camera. Just checked at Amazon, and they have a half dozen or so titles listed. Instead of just picking at random, I thought I would ask for advice here first. Are there any such books that anyone here has had good results from and can recommend?
While I'm on the soapbox, might as well ask this related question: How much of a handicap is it to be using Elements instead of the latest full version of Photoshop?
Thanks one and all for any help you have to offer~

I have "Photoshop Elements for Digital Photographers" I like it.
As for being handicapped by using PSE, let me ask you a question: What do you need to do to your photos that PS will and PSE won't?
Once you have discovered the limits of PSE and feel the need to move beyond it, by all means spend the extra $$$$$ and get PS. |

That's the question, isn't it? I don't know enough about what the programs will do to give an informed answer, so I thought I'd troll for opinions here as a lazy way of filling in the blanks until I learn more for myself. Thanks again for the book referral, Dan.
Anyone else have a favorite ELEMENTS tutorial before I order from Amazon?

I asked for (& got) a Photoshop Elements book for Christmas last year. It is "The Photoshop Elements Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is not a from-scratch this-is-how-it-works book, but rather has many many practical tips on solving specific processing challenges. The author is entertaining as well. It was rated well by many Amazon purchasers - read the reviews to see if it's something that interests you.
Edit: duh, I'm recommending the same book as the folks above. Sorry, but take it as an affirmation.
Also, I have recently taken the Photoshop training module on Video Professor, and it was very good. Visit their website for pricing & special intro offers.

I have a book called "How to Wow" Photoshop for photographers. Its a great book and will step you through the setup of photoshop and then onto tutorials on digital photography and using photoshop.
It is not Element specific.
It comes with a CD that has lots of free actions for you to use and all are shown in the book, it also has every photo from the book on the CD so you can go use the step by step guide on the same photo that is in the book and compare the result.
It also has a handy index to find an area quickly when you can't remember the best settings for a filter etc.

That's ok wkmen! I'll take that as a "second the motion"! Appreciate the comments. Thank you too, Gurilla. I'll pick up "How to Wow" as a followup for my self-education in the basics of ELEMENTS. First the basics though:>. (I'm a slooow learner these days).
Decision made, then. Knew I would find good input here. Ya'll keep on clicking!

Adding to this thread - basically to ask for any additional suggestions.
At first I was going to get Elements 2 for Dummies but I think I want something a little more detailed.
I saw Elements 2 Bible and my hubby thought it might be a good reference. I'm not sure if it really is.
I think it would be nice to have 2 books. One that can walk me through steps - I really need to learn how to do levels and layers.
I also think a good reference book (I have a nice one for HTML) would come in handy to go with.
Any suggestions? I need to be able to use Elements more to it's potential.
TIA!

Photoshop Elements 2 for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide is an easy to read book with good info.
I have both the Elements 2 and now the Photoshop 7 book and they are very informative.
Most of the Peachpit Press books are excellent. They also publish the Adobe Photoshop, CS, Elements for Digital Photographer line, the Wow series, Down and Dirty series.
Check them out at your local bookstore and order online.
