I was shooting with Katie the other afternoon and ran out of light. Rather than quit for the day, I threw a sheet over a canopy frame and blasted 3 500watt work lights through it. The resulting light was very soft, but it only came from one direction and it fell off very quickly. I'm posting a couple of the resulting portraits here just to get your reaction.

Thanks again for any feedback you an offer!

David,

Great results. The fall off creates a moody feel for the shots without depending on hard-edged shadows. Creative solution and you used it to good effect. I like the first shot best due to the leading lines (the outline of her profile leads down into the photo and is picked up by the light colored collar which leads down but back out of the photo) and the higher degree of contrast between the subject and teh background.

Congrats on results that I feel invite the viewer to interject some personal emotion into the shots.

Great photos! Very sharp and clean. I like the lighting and brightness level of the first one best. I think one thing, besides the fact that #2 is a little on the dark side, is the fact that the light is coming from the side her face is turned towards. Maybe a little fill from a bounce card in #2 would help bring up the shadows on her right side.

Great results from a simple lighting setup. I'll have to see if I can acheive results this good with my Halogens.

I think it worked very well for you; looks like it is lit naturally. I also prefer the first for it's strong lines and contrast. (The shodow on her coat seems out of place though. Is that your shadow?) The second one seems a bit more flat to me, but not bad by ant means. Beautiful girl. What ISO did you shoot at? You seem to have avoided grain quite well in circumstances that look like they would add grain. Are the images neat-imaged?

Great work.

I was shooting at ISO400, so there is a bit of grain. It faded as I used levels to turn the background black and then resized to dpc size. I'm sure it will show more in an 8X10 print.

Something in the forum threads here on dpc caught me attention, maybe it was the tread created created jmsetzler with his candid, and motived me to evalulate my work differently. I went through the results with Katie and looked for shots that had an emotional impact on me and then tried to evaluate them from a technical perspective. I think the leading line is what makes is work, but I probably would not have picked this shot if I was simply looking for the technicaly best shot. Anyway, thanks again for you alway helpful input.
