Completely agree. One of the main things that attracted me to DPC was being forced out of my comfort zone. I'm generally one of those flower/cat people so hated on this site. Being an over-achieving obsessive-compulsive person, I haven't liked not winning, but I've learned so much! (like, I know I'll never over-tilt a photo again!) I'm getting an average score on my first free study, but I think that's exactly where I should be looking at the quality of other's work. I'm doing better in the whacky nature one, but not good enough to ribbon -- but still it's my 2nd best score, so I am improving.

well my first entry in DPC has been running around 3.7 not bad considering it's my first. I wouldn't put it much higher myself, but hey I wanted to submit somthing anfter 2 months of watching. |

Congrats on taking the plunge and being in there. You can learn by watching but doing rounds out the picture. |

I just want to say that I've seen some tremendous landscape shots from this challenge. It's almost painful to see how far I have to go to become what I want to be artisticly.

I also must say, this is the highest score I've had since my first entry. anyone else get this reaction? I've also recieved more comments on this entry than any other. Some good, some way off on what they thought I did, Some not so good. All in all it's a good one.

6 - 10's
15 - 9's
...from me and I've been bumping some up so you can probably expect more to come.
Also,
My Stats: You have rated 186 of 488 images (38%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 40 images (8%) in this challenge.
I will continue to leave comments but I'm probably done voting. Just wanted to let you know that some of my comments are decent in length while others are incomplete sentences with the only main thoughts listed out. Either way, if you received a comment know that your image had an impact on me. If I didn't leave you a comment it may be that I didn't have time to get that far. Remember too, that I haven't voted on all images. I started commenting on highest scoring first and will work my way down.
Congrats to all of the lucky 9's and 10's! :-) Again, good luck to all.
Jen

I have to admit that I am curious why people don't rate every image in a challenge. Is it because of dial-up?
I always vote 100% of images, then go back and comment as time permits. I've always thought that if quite a few people go through the thumbs and then only vote on the ones they like, it makes for a VERY uneven and unfair playing field for everyone in the challenge.

Dial up has a lot to do with it probably. I have only voted on 265 images so far and it seems like I've been at it since the beginning of time itself.
198 people have voted on my photo so far and I'm trying to do as much as possible but waiting for all these photos to download does take a lot of time. |

I've been on phenomenally fast cable since day 1 with dpc, so cannot even imagine what it might be like on dialup. I'm so sorry for you guys on dial-up, and so grateful for my cable! |

Originally posted by nshapiro: I've tried a number of sites. The closest to DPC in voting right now with free studies is Usefilm.com, which has some great photographers and shots. However, it's difficult to get more than 10-20 people to view a photo, and even much fewer offer an opinion either in terms of a rating or comment. Many of these sites work off of friends lists, so you only get critiques from your friends, and during a brief initial period where you are on the front page. PhotoSIG has improved again recently, and you can get some really good comments there, but again, each photo only really gets about 10 minutes exposure and worse, the ratings aren't anonymous. |
Same here and I've pretty much given up on the other sites.
Originally posted by nshapiro: Originally posted by scalvert: Free Studies are fun, and lots of folks would like to see more of them, ...snip... I think this would be offset by many new members who would come to participate. Over the past year, where I was both a member of photopoints.com and DPC, I mentioned DPC numerous times in my comments and to my friends there. Some came and established accounts here. But I don't know anyone from there who actually submitted to a challenge. Yet those same people post a new photo every day at photopoints for comments. Why aren't they participating here? Because it's a different kind of photography. That's not a bad thing, but I am proposing we make this site more attractive to all. There are some really fantastic photographers there, and it would be great to see them here. |
The reason I paid for a membership was that I wanted to submit my best photo of the month to the June Free Study and I sure as heck wasn't able to submit a kitten portrait to any other challenge. ^_^ I've not been able to shoot so much for the challenges because of school and so having the free study allowed me to use the photos that I take to explore my world around me anyway, regardless of the challenges.

I have 48 shots that I have classified at 8 and I still have 41% of the images to evaluate. I never score higher than 8 on the first pass. Most of my 8's finish up as 9's and 10's on final evaluation. Lots of great photos.
EDIT
The pattern of having a Free Study every three to four months is fine with me. I find the other challenges "force" me to try my hand at photography techniques that I don't usually consider for the other "every day" shooting I usually undertake (outdoor stuff).

On cable here. I voted for a good percentage of the images. I don't pick out just the good images. I go through it the random way and this time voted until I was sick of voting. The next day I did skim the thumbs and opened any that appeared interesting. I don't vote for just the best images - I have a range from one end of the scale to the other (well, usually not 1's or 2's). The reason I didn't vote on them all is because there's over 400 entries and it's either vote for them all and leave no comments, or vote for a good portion and leave comments too. I like getting both and so for me to do that I can't vote on all 400. With a normal number of challenge entries I do try to vote for all.
I'm not sure if not voting for all entries would make for an uneven playing field or not. Seems like it wouldn't matter since the score is an average of all votes and we're not voting the images against each other ("Which one is better?"). The images should be voted as individual works. If the image is good the score will reflect so. If it is bad, it would also be reflected in the score (average). I might be wrong. I'm hardly a statistician. :-)

Yes, and that's the point, and it's great. But sometimes you just can't do it and I know from experience that it gets frustrating to not be able to enter challenges because of lack of ideas and knowing that what you do have will bomb.

And as a side benefit of more free studies, don't you think people would enter fewer "doesn't fit the challenge but I'm entering it anyway" photos?
Sure it won't eliminate all of them, but it will give people an alternative where they can still play without stretching the challenge. |

@ButterflySis: I have to agree that the OFS challenge was a particularly tough one to get through.
When the results of a challenge are calculated, is everyone's photo averaged according to the total number of voters for that challenge, or is each photo averaged according to the total number of votes that it received? |

scoring an image as a 10 would indicate that it was perfect, which is utter nonsense, i'm curios as to which 'stock photo' is going to win this challenge!

I vote on 100% in a challenge, if I don't think I can get thru them, I don't vote on any!
I feel it is unfair to all who enter challenges if only a percentage are voted on...vote on all or none! |

Nope, wasn't negative, but told me where I had gone wrong.
That's what comments are for and you did a good job. I have noted the growing confidence in your posts and your photos.
Keep going! |

I too have been impressed with the quality of the submissions.
Twelve 10's, Ten 9's, Eight 8's, Fourty-Seven 7's, Ninety-nine 6's, One-Hundred & Eighty-Five 5's, and One Hundred Twenty-Nine 4's. (math right?)
I find it rather odd that someone would leave a comment on my own submission, stating they voted it a 3. Currently it's setting at:
Votes: 234 236
Avg Vote: 7.1368 7.1525
Comments: 44
Favorites: 2
I sure didn't find a single shot in the challenge that didn't meet the challenge, as that is what I would give a 3 (or lower) to.
Go figure.
