Submit a photograph of an object that you, the photographer, can't identify. Natural or man-made, plant or animal, living or not, it just has to be something that looks good in a photo, but you don't know what it is. Give it an imaginative name for the title of the photo, or find out what it is and title it appropriately.

But then it wouldn't be an Unknown Object and wouldn't meet the challenge. ;)

On a serious note, how do you think the voters would act if they DO know what something is? Case in point, I don't know a darn thing about birds, so I might enter one. Somebody might be a bird watcher and know exactly what it is, and think I should have known what it is, therefore it wouldn't meet the challenge.

Good point, undoubtedly would be discussed during the challenge period. My thoughts would be that SOMEBODY is gonna know what the thing is, but basically we just have to not mark someone down if WE know what it is. Uh-oh, honor system!

Concerning birds (or other every-day items) - if you take a bird photo, 99.9% of the time, you knew it was a bird when you took it. If you try to sell that you weren't sure whether it was a European Swallow or African Swallow, well-l-l-l, I think the voters will come after you.

Which is the opposite of my first point. So, I would say encourage the submitters to be honest in searching for their unknown object, and discourage the voters for deducting because of their knowledge of the object.

kind of sounds like the parts challenge. Some of it was identifyable and others were'nt.

Yeah, could be the same kind of results, or also similar to abstracts, but the photographer would be looking for something they don't know about.

I thought of it while driving by a steel mill the other day, and they had of line of finished things in the yard. They were big, the same, and oddly shaped - I have no clue what they were.

Anyhow, photos of such items can be made to look good, or be marketable, or at least tickle our sense of humor. It just seemed fun, and it ought to make us look into things that we otherwise ignore.

So, the more you know, the less you can photograph.

Um, how about reversing this (but keeping the really great idea) Take something familiar (or not so familiar) and photograph it so that nobody knows what it is!

I'm pretty sure this macro challenge will fit this, at least a LOT of the entries will...
